I have not long started a web directory and unsure on the use of <h1 tags and are they that important,
Ok lets say my site is mywebdirectory.com , I have used used a line of text called say (my web directory is free and great) I was told to make it a h1 tag on the master page so it appears on everyone of my sites pages, but as my site is a directory with over 250 categories I have put a second text describing that page like
( directory listing for accountant) should I have made this the h1 tag ? I have made it a h2 tag, or is it not that important, Thank you in advance for any help

H1 tags are not site-wide. You can use H1 tags on all your pages but I would recommend to use only 1 H1 tag on each page.

For your 250 categories, you can put a H1 tag on each category to let Google have a better understanding of what each category is about.

If the text is only 6 words long and a h1 tag would it do harm if I added another h1 tag that describes the page content Like ( Directory listing for accountants ) ?

According to Google crawling guidelines, its recommended to use only 1 H1 tag per page. Adding more than that can look spammy.

Just use a H2 tag instead. It's safer.

Google said nothing of the kind. In fact, just the opposite. If you need
          more, use them.

    1. <H1>SEO Success(change these words to your main keyword and keyword phrase which will be the first word on each of your web pages)</H1>: creates heading level #1 (24 point type—largest)

        Hi algarve,

Yes, he is saying you need large text.

Here's a clue: It's not the h1 tag that makes the difference, it is the relative size of the text that is important to Google. It can be just as effective wrapping the text in a span tag and using CSS to render it in a large font size.

It is the size, as compared to other text on the page that matters, not the HTML tag that is used.

Use it or not. It's not the end all. Bold, strong, are also tip offs.

H1 only refers to the SIZE of the text. Google may think the larger
text is most important. They may not.

If you need more than 1, go for it.

The same people talking nonsense about h1, are the same who bold
words, keyword stuff, title shmooze, alt text stuff, etc. All nonsense that muddles
anything they may get from one lousy h1.

Point size is useless to even talk about in 2013. We are not printing
books or newspapers. Browsers are doing things today not even
        thought about in 1996.

Use H1 ONCE or MAX twice in one page of your website. Use it ONLY for your MAIN keyword, other keywords could be in H2, but do NOT use them with H1 tag.
