When I'm working on the blog it loses ranking

Hi,

I hadn't touched my blog in about a month and a half and it was jumping between 7 and 10th position in Google. I was quite pleased and thought that i would write a few posts, bookmark, ping etc. and do some more backlinking and now it has gone back to like 17th place...

Why does this happen?

Surely it should be getting better ranking with more content....

If there's a sudden jump in your update frequency Google might suspect you're a spam site, keep your updates at a consistent rate, likewise with backlinks.

You may have submitted your site to link farms / directories, that will harm you. The initial spike in rank could have been QDF, it's very hard to say.

That's only a couple of the many possible answers though, there's over 60 core factors to consider. But keep updating with unique content and Google will figure out that you're the real deal. Best of luck.

      Hi Kim,

Most blogging software (CMS) put recent posts on the home page by default, so when you make a new post you are changing the content of your home page. This change in content may cause your rankings in SERP to change.

Most CMS software will allow you to setup a static page for your home page. If you setup a static page it will allow you to optimize that page for certain keywords. This will allow your rankings to stabilize for a particular keyword.

Then you should link to your home page from every other page on your site using the keywords you are optimizing for in the anchor text. This internal linking will help your home page maintain it's ranking.

Thanks for this info it is really interesting! The problem thought is that I already have a static homepage optimised for those keywords.... Since I had a good position in Google I thought I'll start writing pages aiming at slightly different keywords (within the same niche) to gain ranking even for those. The backlinking I have been doing have all been from pages with a value of 6-9 and I have anchored about 50% to my landing page and the rest to individual pages in the blog.

I also changed the text in the left column as I wanted it to sound a bit more human... Before it was too full of keywords perhaps that might be the problem....

I suspect that I maybe have been defocusing a bit with the anchortexts but then again the old links should have the same impact as before, no?

Don said it perfectly. Set up your home page as a static, keyword optimized page and then have a link to your blog... Every page on your blog will then be optimized for the keywords in each post and your homepage will not be affected.

This is a classic example of how Google indexes web pages separately even though it assigns your entire site a more general PageRank value based on its perception of your sites overall value to the InterWeb. Realizing this distinction has helped my SEO efforts immensely.
