Just came across a really good and in-depth case study of a site that got hit by Penguin 2.0: Penguin 2.0 Penalty of Concert Hotels - Link Research Tools

They do a great analysis of the backlink profile of an affected site and look at what Google would probably interpret as suspicious or low-quality backlinks - might be quite an eye-opener for some.

To me, that just read as a giant advertisement for BLP.

I did not see anything new in their analysis.

Crappy links triggered a Penguin filter. Shocking.

I disagree with their conclusions about nofollow links and deeplinks. Plenty of sites are ranking just fine with the vast majority of their links pointing at a home page. Also, a low percentage of nofollow links is nothing abnormal for most sites. The reason the one competitor had a ton of nofollow links is because they run a bunch of ads on other sites. Those sites are adding the 'nofollow' attribute to those links like they are supposed to when selling ad space.
