Google custom search ads styling

Hey everybody,
I haven't been here in a while except to purchase a couple of WSOs. One that I almost purchased was a plugin that adds Google custom search to all website pages. I am currently redeveloping a site and decided to do this manually instead (I had not yet heard of using Google custom search on my site yet--for searching the broader web instead of just my site).
Google offers the option of styling the ads that appear in search results. Does anybody have experience with this? Are their defaults the most effective? Or should I try to blend them in with black text and white backgrounds?
Yes, I could test, but this site isn't very busy, so it would be like shooting in the dark.
Any suggestions?
