Under the Google Keywords tool, does competition refer to competition within the Google AdWords market - or - does it refer to competition in the organic search arena?

    The competition column is only for Adwords, it has nothing to do with organic SERPs.

    Its for AdWords. If you want a general idea of the organic competition, try searching for your keywrod inside " ", and then look at the total amount of websites you get back.
