If you want to start a website or blog in any niche, would you name it with a general name or one with keyword? Which one is better?

For example Kodak is a short and memorable name. Would it be better to name one with keyword?
#brand #generic #keyword
  • I would go for branding now. This has become a latest IM trend. I think you should also go for that. Forget about keywords in domain.

I guess it all depends on how long you want to go with it and how you want to use it. In the short run the generic domain, say, CheapHomesForSale.com, might work better for SEO for a while, but it's never really going to stick to the user's mind. Whereas the brand domain Zillow.com sticks to the mind, hence when he/she thinks about Real Estate websites, Zillow.com is likelier to get remembered/visited. I know a lot of small Real Estate agencies prefer using generic domains rather than brands because it works better initially when it comes to showing up on Google or any other search engine for their specific region. So I say go generic when you're targeting smaller region but choose brand if you want to target a larger region made up up multiple counties.

PS: Also, Zillow sounds legit, CheapHomesForSale does not. That may also come to play in the user's mind.

Thanks, that is insightful. How about a short two or three words name that is related to the niche but not really exact match domain?

Make a good General Name, keywords included name doesn't make any difference,
The site should be good and user friendly instead.

Yes, brand the site with something easy to remember.

The folks stuck on EMDs are a bit delusional, it's not SEO.

Don't get me wrong, something like cars.com is a great domain name, but it's also a brand name, unlike cheap-cars-dallas-texas.com.

There are many success websites with short name, so don't get confuse with it. domain is an most important aspect while choosing the name for the website, it is far better to choose a domain name that is short in length , it will be easy to remember.

Always use general name for your business.
Because, If you use Keyword people may think that it sticks to only one product or services. If you introduce more services or products in your company that will not look Good.

After EMD update release, i would like to go with general name. Yes, i also heard that EMD is no more affecting any site, but still precaution is better than cure.
