On some sites, you can post urls, but they are not hyperlinked, meaning you can not click them. Does google still count them as a backlink?

No they don't count as a backlink. Google finds it and may index your site by way of finding the url, but they won't count as a backlink unless it's hyperlinked. I hope that clarifies it further.

Unfortunately we will really never know how Google actually treats URLs that are not hyperlinked. However, I as a linking strategy I would want both hyperlinked URLs as well as ones that are not hyperlinked: it's just natural for that to happen.

In this case we do know:

    hxxp://ignitevisibility.com/google-confirms-url-citations-can-help-pages-get-indexed

"But our goal here isn’t necessarily to pass any pagerank, which we don’t do with those kinds of links. But rather discover new URLs that we haven’t seen before."

But yes, I would use the url itself as a keyword along with other keywords.. as long as it's hyperlinked.

A URL isn't a link but Google obviously follows plain text URLs inside of xml files which can be submitted to GWT, so I'm sure they can pick up on a plain text URL on an HTML web page.

I'm not suggesting to go out & build plain text URLs & expect them to rank a page.

As previously said, Google notices them and probably uses them for indexing.

Do they count at all? I would guess no. But then again, my guess is as good as yours. None of us know. Only way you would know for sure is if you worked on the algorithm.

It will not count as backlinks, because Google does not count non-hyper linked URL, It always counts hyper links with do-follow links.

I think in this day and age this is too simplistic a view of how the Google algorithm works.

If I can get co-citation like:

"leading eye surgeon Dr Bob (www.drbobeyes.com [non-live url - ignore the hyperlink the forum creates!])"
I will take it, as if I was Google I would be looking at these kinds of signals in denoting brand, authority etc.

I don't have a clear evidence to this, but Im sure the non-linked urls doesn't count as a backlink, as a fact how do google know you have written a url in your post ect.

I've heard that you can actually be penalized by Google Adsense and have your account suspended if someone posts a non-linked url on your forum or blog if it is for an illegal site. So in that way, you could say Google knows about all types of urls, even the ones that are not linked. As to whether the link is counted for SEO purposes, most likely.

What about drop down navigation menus that often uses an onchange event with options as urls. Aren't these crawled by Google anyway?
