Targeted or general site for best SEO?

I have several ideas for niche sites which fall under a loosely related concept. I'm wondering if it would be better to build multiple targeted sites under different domains or a single all encompassing site?

My niche is not automobiles but I will use it as an example. Say I was interested in the niches of auto repair, auto insurance and auto leasing. Would it be better to build autorepair.com, autoinsurance.com and autoleasing.com and have those sites be hyper targeted to those concepts or build automegasite.com which encompasses everything automotive?

My thoughts are that with the targeted niches Google would more readily associate the domain with the concept I'm trying to rank on. However with an all encompassing site it's easier to benefit from backlinks as you could get more pointing to the same domain.

    Build different sites & use all the sites for advertising each of the sites in the automotive network.

    If you have time and energy then go for the sub niche sites as they will likely rank better if all or most content on the site is about that subject rather than being a generic catch all topic. That could apply to any niche including health, beauty, internet marketing, etc.
