when to use search PPC v GDN PPC

eg what I would be doing for my clients, my understanding is the display network (GDN) is as much for branding and positioning as for getting the click throughs, of course you wont say no to them if they're targeted but a prospect of a corporate client, having visited their site , keeps seeing their ads on various pages, recognition starts to work .
What is the most effective ratio of spend between GDN and search PPC ?
