Overoptimized anchor text %

Hi guys,

My website has been hit with a penalty after the 10th of October with my homepage rakings taking a dive leaving the interior pages unscathed. Penguin 2.1 I assume.

A quick check of my backlink profile reveals that 82% of the anchors are the same.

However, the anchor text used is 'my name' and not some dodgy (money) keyword.

Question is, does Google make a distinction between money keywords and very generic keywords such as 'my name'?

If not, it would mean that big brands and/or celebrities run the risk of a penalty on the basis that other websites link to them using their (brand) name as the anchor right?

Surely Google does not have that 'semantic' capability to make that destinction?

Should I clean up the link profile and remove these links which has 'my name' as the anchor text?

Thank you

This whole anchor text percentage thing is a big myth. The real problem is crappy backlinks.

ROTFLMAO! Of course we know why people decided to vary anchor text...they
thought it would make the spam links look like nonspam!

The only thing google ever said was about forum links and people should guess
the reason why. They said don't have sig links with something like:
"Best Most Fantastic Top First Class Number One Spectacular Wii Games on
      the plant!"

Of course one could also gather from that a hint as to how they spot linkspam.

But notice it has NOTHING to do with varying anchor text?!?!

That's most likely OPs problem. Doubtful anyone with a quality link profile ever had a penalty.

That anchor-text percentage is like putting a flaming bag of dog crap on the neighbors front porch, If the bag is gift wrapped with pretty paper it must be better, lol.
