help with domain name and SEO

Hi,

I'm starting a small medical practice in Canada and am going to build a basic website (likely this will be hired out, unless I can pull something off with Office 365 which I get free hosting on anyway). I have narrowed the domain name down to a few choices. One is the specific name of the clinic registered as a .ca Unfortunately the .com version of it is already taken by another clinic in the USA. I don't need US visits at all, is this an issue?

The other domain would not be the name of my clinic but has the city as a keyword (ie torontocardiologists.ca) and the .com version is available also.

I've read that domain keywords are less important now?

I could potentially secure all 3 domains, and redirect them to the first (name of the business) but I'm not sure this will have much benefit, and have heard that you can run into major problems with search engines doing this?

Out of these options, what would you recommend?

I would go with the name of you clinic and use the .ca. You want to build your brand and this will be the best way to go. Plus having the .ca will help you to get more targeted visitors. Make sure you get you site listed on Google Places once its finished. You can do all your keyword work on page and you will rank just fine.

Make sure you build a quality website. The money spent to do this will be well worth it!

I wouldnt narrow your niche like that. I would focus on the long term. That domain won't be worth much if you setup shop in another city and expand your business.

I'd build a brand first and then SEO for the local terms.

For all businesses registering domains, you need to have your local country extension in your domain. So 100% go with .ca forget .com unless you ever branch into the US.

As for your domain name, if torontocardiologists.ca is available, and toronto cardiologists is your keyword, then grab it. PM me if you need any more help.

Definitely go the .ca extension of your business name.

You will be better off in getting qualified local traffic that way and build your brand better.

Keep this mindset when building links and exposure for your website too!

No questions asked. Go for the .ca domain. Something similar to torontocadiologists.ca is brandable, too. Plus, you get the chance to incorporate your main keywords for your site. I have come across many domain names of the same structure and I think, they are all working just fine right now.

Definitely .ca like they said. The other domains can be content or feeder sites that point to your main domain but here's what I really wanted to tell you. If you get here in time there's a WSO that will be perfect for your medical practice that usually runs $197 but it's on special for 48 hours I think.

I retired in 2005 at 43 and now I give away websites like these for FREE [hosting excluded]

When you make at least $100+ per month, we split the profit 80/20 and YOU get the 80% Until then, you keep 100% and I'll help you drive traffic, get backlinks and put the domain in your name too!

    hi yyzmd,

the keyword based domain name still works.. in fact i have seen lots of sites with literally their domainnames formed with keywords phrases as is.. and they still are standing on the top positions.. but i would not do the redirect thing...i would pick a domain name with some part of it featuring a keyword phrase...or a part of the keyword you gonna go after!!

but if you focus on long tail keywords...there will be tons of chances you get a keyword based domainname...and dont ever use free hosting..eventually they forced u to display some ad of their..and you could lose any traffic landing to your page..if they hit on your free hosting related ads within your site.. so pick hostgator up..the baby package is dirt cheap!!

    regards mate,:-)
