When placing your backlinks on other websites, how important is the text surrounding that link (such as contained within the same sentence or paragraph)?

Most people focus on the anchor text, but is it possible Google is actually reading the surrounding text on the page to determine if the link is relevant?

    That's a great question, Samuel. Some SEOs these days believe that a solid link building strategy is to use keyword in the surrounding text and leave links naked. This way, there'll be no keyword-rich anchors, while the context will still be connecting this link to a keyword/niche.
