Google updates - How sensitive for SEO?

Many of SEO marketers are trying to convince that we should be as liquid as possible to Google updates.

How seriously we should take those "threats" and can some updates change the SEO fundamentals?

Have you experienced some serious updates in history of Google that turned SEO completely upside-down?

IMO If you follow the Google guide lines and have unique on topic content, with a natural link profile then any algorithm changes shouldn't really affect you too much.

Its when you start dealing with poor quality links from badly spun articles from websites that were clearly setup just to sell links etc.

It's still all about plain-text & quality links.

Agreed. Personally, I prioritize quality links over quality articles but both are by far the 2 most important success factors in SEO.

Have a plan B. depending too much on a company for your living is never a good idea. diversify, create different income stream from different traffic sources, ppc, social fan base, build a list.

I have tried so many things in SEO, some times failed and some times passed through all the updates, but the most important thing I've learnt that we should take 3 things very seriously,
    1- Content
    2- Backlinks
3- Say no to duplicate articles

The basics will always be there and will never change. Remember these 2:
    1. good content on your site that keeps visitors
    2. backlinks from relevant and trusted sites

Nothing in terms of "real" SEO has actually changed, it's the same as usual.
    - High quality content = ranks.
    - High PR and non-spammy links = ranks.

The only impact it will really have towards your rankings is if you employ spammy link network tactics, duplicate content or, to an extent, thin content.

A few years back, sites like eHow got hit very hard with the Panda update as they were viewed as content farms. A similar thing happened with the first wave of Penguin updates. Many sites that had taken time to buy those Fiverr mass backlinking packages (and ended up with spammy backlinks) were penalized and their sites taken out of Google Search.
