Lets say if I try to rank with a high competitive keyword, and my sites content is poorly SEO optimized.

If I try to drive free traffic to it, can I still achieve high numbers by doing this?

Yes you can but what stops you from simply optimizing your site? You can't get too much free traffic can you?

    High numbers of what?

Where are you going to get this free traffic you speak of from?

Other than organic, so called free traffic, through good SEO I've never seen free traffic achieve very much. You need targeted potential buyers to make any money and with free traffic, with some exceptions, you will be wasting your time.

    Not going to happen.

Did I not understand the question? ugh. No, getting free traffic from other sources is not going to help you rank for a highly competitive keyword. You need links and you need your onsite in order to rank on Google.

I thought you were trying to see if it was possible to get free traffic without ranking on Google. (It is) Teach me to read yukon!!

They posted on the SEO forum so I guess they're asking If they can rank for a competitive keyword without doing any SEO?

You can use forum marketing and social media, but why not invest some time into SEO. Or just pay someone to do SEO for a month

Yea, I'm not sure here... No? I think we can unanimously agree that it is impossible to rank for a high competitive keyword without doing any SCO, or some sort of mathematical anomaly in Google's algorithm.

That being said, there are certainly ways to get free traffic without SEO... Social networks, Youtube (still Google though), forums just like this one, Quora, guest posting... The list goes on.

Anything in particular you had in mind, Mr. OP?

Yes just focus on content production --> and learn great on-page SEO.

Overtime you'll see your traffic numbers steadily increasing.
