The title says it all. I've never really learned the proper, thorough way of doing this and I think It is about time.

Thanks in advance

You can analyze competition even with a free firefox plugin like SEO quake. You just need to check the first 5-10 sites listed on google for your keyword with SEO quake. There are many free youtube videos that explain usage of SEO quake.

A poor man's way to do it would be to just type in that keyword and see how many hits come up. The lower the amount of hits (say around 22K), the easier it would be to rank for that keyword. It's much easier to rank for long tailed keyword like "Restaurants near Billings Montana" as opposed to short term keywords like "Lebron James" or "Seatbelts".

I recommend Adwords Keyword tool, gives you the monthly searches chart to give you an idea of how much people are looking for your keyword, and look for high ranked pages when you search your keyword. If none of the URL's are closely related to the keyword then there are probably not many sites in competition.

Install SEOQuake in your browser (Chrome or Firefox) and use that to view the PR and links to the page. this will give you a lot of help in evaluating the prospects. The lower the PR and links to the pages listed on the first page of Google will tell you a lot.

Deciding if you want to go after that keyword is a personal thing and everyone will tell you something different. So I won't bother. Just remember, lower is better. You will want to find PR n/a or PR 0 sites on the first page as those will be easiest to dislodge. But I think it is links that are the biggest factor, so look for 0 to 100 or so links. That will show you that you will not have to work that hard to dislodge them.

    Download Traffic Travis and SEOSpyGlass.

Run your keywords on Traffic Travis competition and you will be able to see the competition of your keywords and sites usually from the PR, Age, On Site SEO, Number of backlinks e.t.c and then running the top sites on SpyGlass to know the true weight of your competitors backlinks.

However, i don't usually bother with digging beyond the top 6 sites on page one because that's where my REAL competitors.

I simply Google my keywords and see the sites on the first page of Google and begin my research and backlink analysis.

I always use Market Samurai, pretty good for check competition.

The only limit (for me) is that I can analize the competition (first 10 results on google for that KW) only with one single keyword, later try with another one, etc.

Is there any Keyword tool where I can analize the competition for multiple Keywords all together? Maybe LTP? (I still didn't try it)

If you want to use software to do it then go for Traffic Travis (free version and also paid version are available). It is so easy to use.

If you want to do it manually then, here is brief walkthrough..

    1. See whether the keyword is in title, description, domain name or url. Check this for all the top 10 results for the keyword. This will give an idea how good the ON page Seo is for that keyword.

    2. Analyze the backlinks of each results and also see whether they are using the keyword as anchor text. The more the number of keyword optimized backlinks, then it is a bit tougher to crack through to page one.

Here the quality of links also come into picture.

Yes. Market Samurai sucks. Complete POS for analyzing anything.

What you really want is something that does a good job of analyzing the backlinks of a site. The top 3 are your real competitors. Those are the ones you want to analyze. You also need to be able to look at the site yourself and understand site structure, internal linking, coding issues, etc.
