Will moving webserver tank my rankings?

Hi,

I want to change web server and I was wondering if it will negatively affect my rankings. Assuming there is a minimal amount of downtime and the loading time is the same, will my ranking be affected?

Thanks,
Seamy

Rankings can change. Depends on server location (more so because of the next point) and difference in server performance affecting page load times (faster loads can improve your rankings while slower can drop).

You can find it out by testing, load all the data and files on the new server and see if it works fine and runing properly with good loading time, and if it is then you can shift the whole site without any fear.

If there will be a minimal time of downtime and another webserver is as quick as the old one - your rankings won't change. There is no need to worry about that.

Your country specific rankings can change if you move to a server in a different country.

There should be no down time in the change over - you set up the new server and get everything working while the old server is still serving your website. Once you're happy the new server is working you simply change the DNS settings to point your domain at the new IP address.

Within a few hours most of your traffic will be on the new server - there will be a few stragglers on the old one who have old DNS cache data - but that doesn't last long.

If there will be not change in loading time (as you are assuming) the there should not be any significant changes in the rankings. The location of the server may have some effect. Also during the transfer (if you need to) you can slow down the Google bot visits by setting response code to 503 (service unavailable).
