Why Google Chrome will sink SEO...

Now Google is going to have a fun time collecting usage statistics from every little move you make in your browser.....

- How long you spend on a page
- What you click on
- What parts of the page you read
- What you copy and paste
- What you print
- What you buy
etc etc..

And now , millions of users will install this browser with this box checked , and search will become more and more based on human input. I mean , who better to tell you whats relevant than the searchers themselves?

Mass user behaviour is the one thing SEO'ers will not be able to duplicate...and so it will be harder to artifically manipulate rankings.

Google has been doing this to some extent with AdSense, Analytics, and its toolbar.

Now they're taking it to the next level.

Soon we'll all be forced to make content that actually benefits people!

Nah don't worry John, its all happening on the 21st aparently. You just won't need to buy Chrissie pressies.

I see egg on the faces of those that don't and nothing happens.

Love to be a fly on the wall when those explanations are forthcoming

Naw, I would have said "well it's like this dear, the end of the word was nigh so I didn't get you a present. Since I saved up ALL this money, and the cruise lines may be dead due to others feeling the same way, let's go on a nice cruise, or whatever you want! 8-)".

There is some rumor that in the year 2012 all the big internet providers are going to club together and restrict what goes on in the Internet, and effectively strangle small online business out of the market place. Its called net neutrality I think by some people, and some are heralding it as the end of the internet as we know it with less user-generated content. It's a rumor and I am not sure how much substance there is, but with the comments on here, I thought that was what they were alluding to.

2012 is also the year the mayan calendar ends, or something like that which means the world is going to hell in a hand basket, or something like that.

According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end in 2012. So there's a big hoo-hah about it all over the web and TV.

I think there's even a movie by the guy who write 10,000 BC coming out about "2012" (and if you've seek 10,000 BC you know 2012 is going to be a laugh-out-loud riot!)

Anyway, back on topic. It's a shame that Google has to track our browsing habits, but I guess it's necessary to make a better search engine. </sarcasm>

What we're looking at here are things possibly becoming more of a lottery.

It will take on a viral marketing aspect; the more visitors you get virally, the better your rankings will be, where your traffic will snowball.

                          The rich get richer.

Alas, will Google become the dominant browser? I'd say it will take a 50/50 share with IE, at most.

IE will continue to have a huge advantage - that is, Microsoft will continue to own the real estate the browser is parked on. New computers will still ship with IE, and I'm sure if push comes to shove, MS could play that card even harder.

I see this taking more of the Firefox market share away.

                            As far as SEO...

Unless you're creating a site that nobody wants to read, print or buy from (like an Adsense site), then yes, I can see how these types of stats can hurt the rankings. But from a IM'ers perspective, I can only see it helping.

I just installed Chrome. That tickbox was unticked - and I left it that way.

Has anyone else noticed that it displays a different set of Adsense ads from IE or Firefox? I think they are more tightly focused on the page content.

Google Chrome will NOT be the end of SEO.

                              1. Not everybody will use it. With IE being the default browser in a new PC,
Jane Doe who goes looking for cookie recipes isn't going to bother installing
                              Google Chrome.

                              2. If you simply put up a site that actually has GOOD content that people
are actually looking for, your page will do fine.

All this gloom and doom is BS.

Oh, and the world will end in 2167, not 2012. So please make the necessary
                              corrections to your yearly planner.

This has been a public service announcement.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled apocalypse.

It has been around for at LEAST DECADES!!!!! There have been at least 4 supposedly different sources that have said 2012. TODAY, most obviously believe all are tied to the mayan calendar, and they claim it is simply the way the last one ended up. Astronomers today may go only so far into the future. Obviously, the farther out you go the more likely you are wrong.

HECK, the gregorian calendar is even inaccurate. I will NEVER forget the time that people got the year 2000 wrong! I was taught every year divisible by 4 was a leap year. MANY thought 2000 WASN'T! WHY? Because years divisible by 100 aren't. It WAS! WHY? Because years divisible by 400 ARE! Oddly, though I was taught an inaccurate method, it holds true from 1901 to 2100. I don't think I am going to live that long, but it is a small fraction of the mayan calendar.

To totally hijack this thread, and expand on what Steve said...

The exact date is 12/21/12. This is the last day of the Mayan calendar.

Also, a mathmetician did some calculations based on an ancient chinese philosopher (older than the Great Pyramids) and came up with the same exact date: 12/21/12. He had no knowledge of the Mayan calendar until after he came up with his conclusion.

To have two ancient sources pick the exact same day is very long odds...

However, there is some science to this...Which is what really draws my attention to this. 12/21 is the first day of winter (winter solstace) and in the year 2012, the Earth, Sun and a black hole in the middle of our galaxy (The Milky Way) will all be in a straight line.

Here's where it gets interesting...In the 50's, Einstein said that when this happens, it's possible that our Earth will have a polar magnetic shift, with magnetic North becoming South and South becoming North. This would rip the continents apart and cause mega earth quakes, huge eruptions and giant tsunamis all over the planet.

It isn't likely to happen, according to Einstein, but when scientists like Einstein say it's possible, and this date also corresponds with a couple of ancient predictions also picking the exact same date, I find it to be interesting.

Einstein was a retarded plagarising buffoon.

                            Really, he was.

And the Mayans... davebo is right: If a Bible-basher came here predicting the end is nigh, everyone would laugh at them. But mention the Mayans, or some other supposedly-advanced ancient civilisation (they weren't, btw... they were barbarians who knew how to build stepped pyramids) and everyone instantly believes.

I look forward to 22-December-2012 when, for the umpteenth time, the Doomsayers continue their looooong track-record of looking like complete eejits.

It's STILL WORTHLESS!!!!!!! At times, I may leave a page up for WEEKS! If it refreshes itself, they may look like different visits! That is true EVEN if I never wanted to go there! There are POPUPS! There are firewalls! There are sites that FORCE clicks. Any attempt to stop counting them is a shot in the foot, but they may be WORTHLESS!!!!! In short, it is about as useful as a polygraph is for getting at the truth!

Google should go back to the OLD way, and factor in only cross links on relevant sites and reviews. Their current way is GARBAGE!!!!!! Want PROOF? How many times do you search and end up with a site that is just loaded with Paid links!?!?!? The OLD method of using metadata and term weightings would force those down to the bottom and make it easier to determine WHICH were worthwhile.

I assumed everyone was aware that Google IS "Skynet", and after the Rise Of The Machines, the end of the world in 2012 will be blessed relief. (Especially if you're in California like me, where our governor IS the Terminator.)

The four cross confirming sources for the 2012 date are the Mayans, the Aztecs, the Sumerians, and that Chinese philosopher. The elimination of the net as we now know it is supposed to happen BEFORE 2012, as in as early as next year, with the web being transformed into a larger version of cable with only a few thousand sites made accessible to the regular surfer. You heard it here first (unless you heard it somewhere else).

Good that there are many other ways to drive traffic to a site beside SEO
