newbie question about expired domain indexation

Recently, I start looking for expired domains. I came across a few good ones in terms of DA/PA. But, when I check the google index of those websites and find that some of them only have their subdomains indexed, for example, ww2.domain.com ww5.domain.com. Does this mean that main domain(www.domain.com or domain.com) has some issue with google before? Thank you.

If the main domain is no longer indexed then you can never be 100% sure that it is penalty free. But...

If you've done your due diligence and checked archive.org for any trace of spam usage and assuming the main domain has some good quality backlinks in place (i.e. not all of the backlinks go to these subdomains) then it's worth buying as domains like this do get re-indexed.

Is it a completely expired domain? In other words, it's free to register and not in an auction process? If so, you've got to be willing to gamble on the reg fee and a bit of your time to set the site up - if you're not willing to take the risk then you might lose out on some gems.

It is completely expired, which means I can pick it up with $10. archive.org helped me to rule out a few sites that had very spammy content before. But, I do find one that has some decent back links go back to root domain. Since it does not cost too much. I will give it a shot. Appreciate your help.
