I think EMD is dead... Or maybe harder to rank now

Do you have the same experience? I checked my profile of sites and I realized that I have 4-5 sites that can NEVER be recovered, no matter how many high PR backlinks I sent to them. My suspicion is that EMD is not longer favored by Google.

You see, I tried to rank an EMD where it has really low competition: low allintitle:, no authority sites in top 10, etc. and yet this EMD site did not rank even in top 100.

Is it because it's a new site? Well, I have 2-3 sites that are at least 2+ years old and they have tanked since the last update, never able to recover them. I have to start a new domain name and voila! They rank in the first page within 3 weeks.

Do you have the same experience and suspicion that EMD is on the dying mode?

you can sorta see it looking at results for keywords where you know there is an EMD.com etc... domain, often they are not on the first page at all.... that said the domain name will still have some sort of impact on ranking for some time to come, my guess at least.

I had several EMD sites all ranked in the top three of Google mostly in the hydroponic/aquaponic niche. Since the Penguin update I would day 20% were still ranked in the top three. 20% on the first page 10% are now on page two and the rest have disappeared completely.

All were ranked using the same method using the same backlinking strategy and had the same number of posts 30+.

Make of that what you will....

EMD names still carry some weight, its all about relevancy, so I think they will always have a "slight" advantage. It's your link building strategy which will make or break your rankings.

Not dead just different. Less weight is being placed upon EMDs than in previous years.

EMDs still work though Google doesn't give that much boost. They're looking at the overall quality of the site - onsite and offsite whether it's EMD or not.

Yes, EMD is dead. But if you are using white hats SEO tricks then your website still rank on Google. I have lots of EMD website which is ranking very well in Google.

You can still see plenty of EMD ranking well in Google. I'm sure it's dead but the importance as ranking factor appears to be less than it once was. Instead it seems to me sites authority sites like slideshare now have more weight.

Well Emd is not dead, they just not that giving importance to it because of the newest updates like humming bird. but like the old days quality and good site contents is the basis of having a good rank.

We just ranked our EMD.TV. So emd is not dead - It works 100% but you need to make sure that you build a quality site with content and backlinks.

yeah from what I vaguely remember form what I think was a matt cutt's video it sounded like they were putting a filter for quality on an EMD. Essentially to check to see if it as a decent site before giving you the ranking boost.

I've lost 90 pounds(160+ overall) fasting since January 2016 after failing for years on diets that just made me sick and miserable. Check out Prudently.com where I'm writing about fasting and weight loss. Get a Brandable Domain Name at Name Perfection.

They still carry weight, but have a huge disadvantage: you can't build branded anchors. Google LOVES brands. I'm seeing sites rank with nothing but branded anchors (and tons of link juice flowing through those branded anchors) + onsite. Pages with good onsite are no harder to rank than EMDs, leading to the question: why make it harder on yourself. Branded domains open up more doors too. Once you start to rank well, you can target an entire niche versus just a few keywords.

We have a large portfolio of EMD names and they still rank 1st page usually even with just a small site built out. But, we did get hit hard on a number of sites where there was dupe content with the just the geo EMD name being different.
