SEO for China and Japan - is there demand?

Hi forum members,

after working for over six years in China and Japan, I am now thinking about using my knowledge about Asian markets to offer SEO/online marketing services specifically for this region.

My question is: In your opinion, is there a sufficient demand on the Western markets for such a service? In my experience, most American and European companies have no or only very poorly implemented websites for the Chinese and Japanese customers, but then again, maybe there is simply no interest.

Before I jump into such a project full time, it would be awesome if you could give me somewhat of an idea if this is a very stupid business idea or not. :p

Thanks so much in advance, really appreciate your help!!

    Hi

China is a burgeoning economy and with its size comes the tremendous buying power that sooner or later will attract the businesses world over. So from a very macroscopic view there might be enough opportunity to make a fortune there. But then again whether it makes any sense to get into that kind of a market given your circumstances and the current situation is something I am not really sure about.

You wouldn't know until you try...

I believe there is a good market for it even if it doesn't show enough queries on Google Keyword Planner.

First of all, check the keywords on Google Keyword Planner to ascertain the online demand.

If there is then rank your site on the first page if Google.hk (China) and Google.co.jp (Japan), that will give you some good lead.

Promote on Facebook, a lot of Chinese and Japanese hang out there.

I don't think the language is a barrier for the OP since he has worked for 6yrs in China and Japan.

I wouldn't say there's demand in the West for it, but I'm sure there is in China and Japan. Any company operating in international markets will have a large enough budget (millions) that they won't need someone like you. Smaller businesses in China and Japan that would benefit from more organic traffic, however, would definitely need you.

I think there is demand in China. But do you understand how Baidu works? That's the main search engine in China. And I think it's quite different from Google.

Web design is very different in China and the West. The Chinese love pages with 2000+ links on the home page, and very busy looking designs. Go check out some of their big sites.

Japan is a more lucrative market but given the complexity of their written language I have no idea how you could SEO or even anti-SEO. Japanese sites also look way different to anything that would be popular in the West.

I guess a starter question would be what search engines do people use in China and Japan, and what SEO works with those engines? Yahoo is in purple, baidu.com is in green.
