I'm managing marketing campaigns of my company's product, but our niche (in SEO industry) is extremely competitive and most of the keywords with purchase-intent are literally taken.

Our competitor, who is in the top 3 of Google's results for the money keyword, has DA 62, PA 60 and about 154k links from 3,4k domains. I was wondering if it's even possible to get close or even someday outrank them with such a backlink profile?

What strategy you would pick in my place?

It's always possible to outrank someone, but depends on multiple factors.

Considering your an SEO, or at least an online marketer, I'd assume you know the following.
Start off by actually analyzing their backlinks and:
    - Create a list of backlinks of theirs that are easily obtainable for you (e.g Directory links) and create them for your own site.
    - Find out just how many of those 154k links are spammy or irrelevant.
    - Work out roughly how many, or what sort of, PR links they have (PR 4-5 or higher) and work on trying to match those.

That would be a good start.

Alternatively, don't focus on the primary keyword so much right now. Work on building some solid ranks for multiple long tail keywords that are related to your primary keyword. This will, in turn, provide more authority and relevance for your primary keyword.

One would assume that you would know the answer to that....either that or
change your niche, cuz that SEO thing aint working out. Perhaps using your
own SEO software might help. Or not.

Not exactly for advice. Just opinions or tips. I'm not new to IM, but I'm still quite fresh in technical SEO. It's not easy to compete in in such a crowded niche and getting high rankings (especially, that they aren't scored in a matter of days). Getting more exposure in a search engines is what it's marketing is missing. It's a long-term goal, rather than the only marketing activity I'm doing.

Aside from the suggestions above, you also need to analyze your on-page SEO. Have a checklist of the important on-page optimization and try to also have tons of long tail keywords (aside from your main keywords).

It's always possible to outrank a high competitor as long as you keep yourself updated of the latest SEO rules by Google. And that said, focus on quality links with great content.

Good luck trying to rank in the SEO niche. That could literally take over a year of building high quality links, and even then it's questionable. Your only option is to get a $10k+ budget and rent nothing but PR7-9 links. That "might" get you results.
