how to check competition now?

So since google hardly update the pagerank publicly anymore how do we check the competition off keywords? I used to just go by page rank and the lower the better but obviously this doesn't really show the whole picture now because they dont update it..

I am installing Mozbar plugin either for Firefox or Chrome and looking at the page authority of top 10 competitors.
