How long does it typically take your backlinks to show up on search engines? I've added roughly 50 backlinks on mostly high PR sites in the last two weeks and none have shown up yet.

I'm talking about going to google for instance and doing "link:yoursite.com"

Try using the Yahoo Site Explorer. It's better for showing you backlinks.

tnt ... I might also suggest you get your self setup in google's webamaster tools. Create a gmail account, and from there - you eill be presented many options of additional services and tools from Google.

You'll have a little setup to do to get you sites registered in googles webmaster tool set - but they have a interesting external links checker tool.

I have a widget on my iGoogle home page even that shows me all my sites and the backlinks google sees for all of them. It updates about every three weeks or so. Kinda handy :-)

A trick for you ... ping the pages where you leave your links. If you linking on web 2.0 sites with rss feeds - grab the rss feedurl and ping that with pingomatic .. and perhaps feed that rss feed url to some rss aggregation sites.

Do a search in Yahoo! site explorer and you will see more. Google typically only shows a very small percentage of your links, but they still give you credit for the ones they do not show.

Most of SE refreshes their index several times a month. Yahoo show links faster than Google, but that does not mean the don't put the links not displayed in consideration

Backlinks get picked up as soon as the page they appear in is crawled. Once crawled, the backlink information is integrated in the data used to define the page's rankings; what gets displayed is quite a different thing.
