Yes, competition targeting the same keyword can drop your page in the SERPs.

Build up authority on your ranked page & do more of the same SEO for additional internal pages on the same domain. Also, having multiple domains targeting the same/similar niche/keywords can be a safety net for ranking pages. If position #1 in Google SERPs has a lot of traffic, positions #2 & #3 will also have traffic.

That's how to own a keyword in the SERPs.

i ask because my expertise is market research. I cant tell you how much opportunities i come across that with the right cash and the right team, can dominate, literally dominate a market to the point in where it effects the industry and corporate investors. This knowledge is both dangerous and beneficial, what i see in these untapped under developed markets online are the same website with no updates all the time, their rankings never change, ever, they stay the same with literally no updates. Im talking about websites that are 5 YO and have never been updated.

        This is why i ask.

        To reiterate my question

If i rank for a keyword and dominate that field is their much worry in never building back links to that particular keyword so long as i have no competition. Will my rankings still be the same so long as no one competes? will google just de-rank me as time goes by because im not building back links to that keyword??

If you're ranking for a keyword and there is nobody to compete you, then definitely your ranking will remain unchanged... without building any backlink.

We also do not think that no content updates bring lower rankings.
We know several examples that brake this theory.

While we see that lots of sites remain on TOP without any change of content.

As for us we can offer you such logic:

        1) If there is no competition in your desired market for selected keywords you will get into Top 10 within 2 month. No matter how old competitors are.
Google is constantly giving good positions to new sites. This is what they say "We wish to make internet better". So if no one else is climbing up the hill you will get there without any problem.
Additional permanent links from trusted sites monthly will make your positions stable and not changed.

        2) If the competition is high you will get to Google TOP 10 anyway. But this all depends on backlinks that you will use. There are lots of university sites, lawyers, dentists, plastic surgery specialists that do not update their content for years and still they rank high. All depends on good links: reputable sites show Google that your site is interesting and valuable. And they just do not have any chance NOT to give you good rankings.

After recent Google updates they detected several paid links obtained from Link Markets. The results are obvious in any industry: you can see new sites in TOPs without tons of links. And sites with thousands of links that ranked there for years are thrown away. It's a good chance for you to try to get what it
        was impossible before.

So your content has to be unique. But good backlinks are more important.
This is what we see daily
