I am very close to SPAM reporting a PBN.

I know I'm going to get some hate for saying this on this forum, but I see this post as a community service to the general public, webmasters, SEOs, search engines, and even (perversely) novice PBN operators.

There have been a number of occasions where my websites have been subject to attempted utilization as a tier in pyramid link schemes.

Spammers/SEOs sometimes try to take advantage of the genuine editorial links they have received from my sites by directing lots of links towards the article(s) that benefit them - IE there are links in the articles to their clients' websites and they think the genuine editorial contextual high PR backlink isn't enough so they blast spammy links at the article.

This happens because my sites are genuine authorities in their vertical market segments (I'll translate that to 'big niche authority sites' for those of you who don't get traditional marketing lingo), and the link spammers figure my sites can withstand the hit without being penalized and consequently will shield them and their clients from the fallout of their spammy link building.

My typical response is to deny their efforts and any benefit they think they will get (there are a number of ways of doing this and I select the particular method depending on how valuable the article is to me), while protecting my sites from the spammy links, and I send them a warning not to do it again.

Well, someone didn't get the MEMO - even though I sent it to them twice before.

This particular SEO, who is prominent in my market, has used the same PBN now for the third time to link spam genuine articles on my sites to boost their clients' sites.

Two warnings I sent to them apparently had no effect on their behavior. It has been a different client of theirs each time, but the same PBN the links have been delivered from.

I have identified significant parts of their PBNs / Pyramids / Link Schemes, the agencies paying to use them, and the clients who are beneficiaries whether or not they know it.

So here is what is going to happen to them, and the next individual/company that tries this on....

I'm going to send the details I have gathered about their PBNs to Google and Bing. Although I think I'm pretty good at identifying PBNs, I realize the information I have gathered is probably only the tip of the iceberg, and once this information is in the hands of the major search engines - along with a complaint - the excrement will really hit the fan for the spammers and their clients.

Will innocent third parties be caught up in this?

The answer is YES.

This is self preservation and I make no apology.

If you have innocently paid for the services of an SEO who uses techniques to promote your site which in turn harm others, then your beef is with the SEO - not the guy protecting himself, his clients and his staffs' jobs from unethical SEO behavior.

And for those of you who think I'm being hypocritical by complaining on a forum but not automatically reporting these things directly to the major search engines, it's because my biggest leverage to get the problem fixed for my company, my staff, and my clients, is to hang the threat of reporting over the heads of the perpetrators.

I will however carry out the threat if they don't take the necessary action to protect my sites by taking down their spammy links.

I'm looking forward to seeing spammers try to justify their actions in the replies I'm about to get to this post.

Well as someone who has his own PBN, I'm actually as surprised as you are that this person decided the authority of a genuine editorial link was not good enough and subsequently chose to use his network as tier 2 links. I don't think it makes sense either, particularly if he is not only linking to your site from his PBN but also to the same client site.

Can you tell if he is doing this?

If he is then what a footprint he is leaving....

    PBN site --> Client site
PBN site --> Your site (or any other site that links to the client) --> Client site

Do this multiple times over with the same PBN sites and to me it seems like a relatively easy spot for any Googler. Or is this just me?

Steve, you are correct in that they have left big footprints identifying their network(s), and the nature of the footprints is somewhat similar to what you have described (not exactly - but close).

You are also correct in suggesting that if I can identify the networks with a manual inspection, that Google can do it too - that's why I referenced "novice PBN operators", which was my polite way of saying "morons selling links from obvious public 'private' networks".

BTW - don't be surprised about this happening, there are a lot of people and companies out their offering 'professional white hat SEO' services that wouldn't recognize a spammy link if it jumped up and slapped them in their face.

Also, I think some of these morons have misinterpreted articles by SEOs such as Moz who suggest backlinking articles pointing to your or your clients sites is a good idea - when Rand said this in one of his Friday Whiteboards he meant the occasional editorial link to support a backlink - not an all out spam campaign with a PBN or a public network like UAW.
