I am having a little problem with adwords.

I am targeting brand name plus a keyword extension.

Because I am not a loud to target the brand name, I have to put this brand name in the negative keywords section.

But when I add the brand name to the negative keyword tool, none of my other keywords show when searching for them?

How do I get around this? all the other advertisers seem to be ok.

Not sure I completely understand, but if your keyword/keyword phrase does not include the brand name, then you must be bidding too low if your ad does not show.

There is a way where you can actually get ANY trademarked term and brand to show in Adwords, there IS a very valid and legal trick to it which gets past Googles complicance team. As we all know brand and trademark terms are highly profitable so its well worth looking into this. Drop me a PM if you want help with this btw.

But in regards to your question, I would simply delete the keyword you are bidding on from your keywords tab and ad itself, rather than adding it to your negative keyword list, as this usually causes complications. Much less stress this way of just removing/pausing it

Any questions just let me know mate,

I am targeting brand name + keyword I am allowed to target brand name + keyword but NOT brand name.

So i have a few keywords like:

      brand name + keyword
brand name + keyword + keyword

I have added brand name to the negative keyword tool. As soon as i do this, none of my keywords show.

It works because none of my ads show for brand name, but then on the other hand none of my other ads show for brand name + keyword ?

Because all of my keywords start with brand name + keyword I think that's the problem. That's why they are not showing???

Your ads are not being shown for any keywords that include brand name in them, because you have added the brand name to your negative keyword list.

That is what the negative keyword list does: your ad will never be shown for any search that includes any of the keywords on there.

However, is it a broad match of the brand name you have added to your keyword list? I think the negative keyword list also accepts exact matches, so try to only have [brand name] on the negative keyword list and you might be able to achieve what you are after.

Who said you can't bid on a brand name?

      Common practice, actually.

Funny thing....google actually spells out how to do it!

Maybe the best help for adwords is google, not the WF.

Now if you are an affiliate of some "brand" that bans the use of the
term in adwords according to their own TOS, well, that's a different story.

You can bid brand name, just you can't use brand name in ads.

I guess you saw very high "First page bid" for brand name only, that's normal, quality score for this kind of keywords is low. "Brand + keyword" quality score should be higher and CPC lower.

For negatives keywords you can use exact and broad matches. If you added ad broad - you are blocking all search terms that includes this word, of you want exclude brand only - use exact match [brand]

    Hostas is correct.
The issue is being caused by your match type.
Currently your using the default match type : "broad match".
Enter your keyword as "Exact match" by putting square brackets around it.
