Back to 100th after Penguin without doing anything -now what?

Hi,
My site was #1 with 2 big keywords from 2009-2012. Then Penguin came. My ranking started to drop from #1 to #10 > #50 > #200 > #500 > and then disappeared over a month or two. I did whatever I could do at that time to no avail for 3-4 months then I gave up although I kept the site on line. I did not do anything after that. I did not even check the ranking. It was just there sitting.

Today after more than a year - for some reason I thought of checking the rank of the site with the 2 keywords. To my surprise they are both somehow back to around #100. Now I am wondering 2 things.

1: I assumed it was Penguin because it happened about the same time as everyone was affected by Penguin, but is it possible it was Panda or something else (not Penguin) though it got a severe beating as to disappearing from the rank? I read somewhere that if you did not get warning it is not Penguin, is it true? Even though I know I have (had) many unnatural links, I did not get any warning through Webmaster's tools.

2: Either way, now it is back to #100 - is it safe to assume that if I start doing white hat SEO on this site - i.e. make good quality content and get "natural" links etc. - there is a chance it would rank high again?

Thanks

You read somewhere that if you did not get a warning it was not Penguin? Penguin is an algo update and not a manual penalty. Manual penalties receive warnings, algo penalties do not.

Sounds like you have bad backlinks pointed to your site, I would start by getting those removed homey. Services like linkdelete could help they do a lot of banner advertising on here and I had good success with them.

You can rank high again as long as you change the way you link build after repairing your backlink profile. The key is to not build toxic links that you think are "white hat", that means no article directories, link directories, no comment and forum spam, and no Angela style web 2.0 links.
