SEO question (I can't think of a good title lol)

Hey guys/girls,

Ok I have a quick question about SEO.

If you come to a blog and the HOMEPAGE is a really high PR, but the BLOG itself that you'd be writing for (assuming you're writing a guest post) is a 0...how much would that affect SEO?

I know obviously the high PR would be great, but the blog itself has 0 so I'm not sure if the search engines would count that as yet another crappy blog...or if it would pick up on the fact that your link is coming from a domain thats a high PR - even if the link itself is on a page that's low PR.

Anybody have input on this?

P.S. This has nothing to do w/ the post, but WOW my signature sucks! I gotta change that bad boy later

    These kinds of backlinks are definitely worth getting for a number of reasons -

    - There's no such thing as a bad backlink (if there was you'd spend your time sending them to your competitors).
    - The domain's PR contributes to the SEO effect you experience, even if the page has none.
    - Your post will be linked to from the high PR homepage in someway, which indirectly passses the high PR link juice on to you.
    - Blogs and other such sites grow their content and PR over time. Even if it's lower PR now there's a good chance it'll improve as time goes on and the earlier you get in there the more the link will be worth as more links to it will be indexed by Google.

    Hi,

    Two things here:

    1) You will be getting a backlink from a relevant (I assume) site which will help your site get spidered and ranked in the SERP's - which is GOOD
    2) Page rank is passed based on the PR of the page with the link on it so in this case the page you link to from the blog post will not receive any additional PR as long as the page with the blog post on it is PR 0 - which is not so good

    One workarround for problem 2) is to make sure you write a good post and then promote that blog post with backlinks, bookmarking, RSS submission, etc. to increase it's PR and therefore the amount of PR passed through your backlink.

      This is an excellent question. There are lots of opinions on both sides of tha argument as to how much value such a link will get.

      If you've seen the WSO from Angela about backlinks, you will know that she is firmly of the opinion that even if the page that your link is on is PR0, if the main site has a high PR, you will still get some credit.

      Having used Angela's 'packets', I can say that I've seen a significant move in rankings and these have been sustained over several months.

      So I'd say it is worth you writing the blog post.

    First of all, don't obsess over the little green bar. It's at best a rough estimate of where a particular page was a few months ago and doesn't reflect the current state and doesn't account for parts of Google's algorithm.

    If the site has a good PR (4+) it probably has some authority with Google. Google trusts it. New content that appears there will also be trusted even if it's PR n/a or PR0. Having a contextual link from a site like this can greatly boost your site, even if it's from a new, unranked, page.

    As a further note. Page Rank used to be directly related to where you appeared in the SERPs but now it's at best a vague indication. A site with high PR is a trusted "authority" site and a dofollow backlink will do wonders for increasing your SERP ranking.

    I have noticed that there are 2 schools of thought.

    Like someone has already said, all dofollow backlinks are good. Higher PR links are probably better. But I feel that there are a lot of folks who only go after high PR links. By doing this I think that they are selling themselves short.

      Alright so the overwhelming majority believe that even though the actual page is PR0 - the high PR of the site overall will pass onto the page and give it much more of a boost.

    It's relevancy of the blog that you need to be worried about, not the pr, which btw can grow if the post is good enough.
