Has anyone built a niche site on a expired/old domain? I'm planning to buy a niche relevant domain (without content) that hasn't dropped. What if I build out a similar site.. Does it give me benefit in ranking a site or not? Or maybe google has already flagged it, so when I start the backlinks doesn't count anymore..

What are your thoughts?

I myself but also and in particular someone I know built various sites on expired, high PR (PR 5+ and PR 6) domains. NOT NICHE RELATED. It doesn't matter whatsoever.

Those sites rank incredibly. He's now ranking #1 or #2 for most reviews and articles, some very tough keywords.

All you need to do is make sure that obviously the PR is real and that the site has a good link profile, not a PR site where all the links are already gone so the PR would be gone too next G update. Again....the power of such sites is mind-blowing. Putting whatever content on the PR6 site is almost a guarantee for an article ranking #1.

I bought a PR6 domain about a year ago with all links still in place, it costed me $1000,-.

The site wasn't ranking that well for it's own content though, sure most titles at #1 but when I filtered out a few words from the title to make it more like an interesting keyword it was often ranking at page 5 and beyond.

The strength of the domain was definitely not a problem, it had tons of links from government sites and back then we got great results when moving up an insurance keyword in the UK from page three straight to page one, a keyword with 1000's of exact searches per month that was, don't remember the exact amount. That was cause of a link to a client site from that domain.

My point, it's no guarantee whatsoever that your content will start to rank great, just cause you placed it at an expired PR5+ domain.

      There's more to it.

One of the benefits of such domain is that you can go more aggressive with exact anchor text's as the domain already has plenty of diverse back links so that's a huge gain.

This is the main benefit. I would look for cheaper sites with fewer previous links. You can build your own very quickly. There was some research on here about new vs old and how many links you can add.

Indeed, you can even pick up deleted domains for just the registration fee that already have 100's of back links.

And then boost them with only high PR links using exact anchors.

Saves a lot of money on building links pure for the sake of diversity.

I built a finance site on a relevant PR6 domain that I bought years ago (got it at auction after it dropped) and it gets around 200 uniques a day - while I realise this is a small number, it is for some quite high value keywords.

So yes, it is possible but as nik0 said it is by no means a guarantee.

Yes that works really well but make sure that:

    - The PR domain has valid PR
    - It does not have spammy backlinks pointing to it

Nah, you can repurpose that domain to use in any market. If it has good links pointing to it, once the new content gets indexed, more often than not, it will rank fairly high.

I did. It all depends on the previous state of the domain. If it was just a parked site, you won't get much benefit. To be honest, you should focus on your site. Rankings depend mainly on what you will do with the domain, not what someone did with it in the past.
