Hey how's it going. I run an authority site and have recently landed two guest posts in my niche on two PR 3 websites. I figure that's a decent start, but there's probably much more that I can do. What are the effective SEO techniques that work today, besides guest posts?

Social Media content distribution works well and so does participating in social groups and forums in your niche.

Content syndication to free to submit sites still works. Press releases, pdf/doc directories, etc. You can also boost your tier1 links with software assisted links, this is still safe and effective.

Sorry but that's a very dangerous thing to say. At least in that simple of an explanation.

I don't disagree that you can use tools effectively. But you have to know what you're doing and be very, very selective and smart about it.

I also think it's simple enough to rank without using tools that it's not necessary, at least in terms of using them for money sites.

Today's world is all about Social Media marketing. Create a FB Fan page, twitter pages, Pininterest to get more traffic. Ask your twitter followers to RT as studies show that more than 75% of times, you ask a good blog to be retweeted it gets retweeted by some follower. Increase your FB fan base. Promote via Linkedin.

But all this should be backed by excellent quality blog posts. Before hitting "publish" ask yourself if you would like to read and recommend this post. If your answer is NO, then edit it again till you satisfy yourself.

Create some good ebook and give it for free to increase your user base. Atleast you will get some email subscription. Use this opt-in list to timely email and ask users to check new blogs. But don't overdo this by emailing daily as users might spam you. Once in a week is good.

Don't have high hopes when you start these mechanism but 10,20,30 new readers everyday will gradually add to several thousands over a period of time.

Most important, don't think that some Harry Potter's magic wand will bring several thousand visitors in a day. Rather stay away from unethical or unwarranted ways to bring traffic. That seldom happens unless you have one of most compelling stuff or ideas to promote.

What's wrong with starting a Squidoo page, uploading a video to Youtube, do some guest posts and share some infographics around.

        Nothing.

Unless you start to mass spam all those low quality platforms.

Do you think infographics still work in 2013? And squido which was famous before 2-3 years like ezinearticle was.
Social media is the only thing which is working because if you check updates from google, they are more focusing in getting social signals and they always talk about natural links.

Dude I'm guessing you was hit by the search engine updates or you failed miserably at SEO.

Squido has worked great for many years and anything of quality published on there will continue to work great-

Ezinearticles might not be as easy to work with as it once was but that doesn't mean users are still not benefiting from it.

I recently purchased my first infographic for one of my websites. It continues to send me good traffic and has diversified my backlinks.

It's important you dont become one of those extremists and go and build hundreds of one type of links all at once.

Diversify, publish good content, syndicate that content and your infographics, articles etc will continue to work for you.

Lol an infographic is just a material, how can you say that such thing won't work anymore? It's all about where you get it featured.

I do agree that most of the public places are not really worth it to get a link from in terms of power to rank but I still wouldn't leave them out, even if their only purpose was to provide more anchor diversity it's still worth it.

    Tiered link building.

    Money site
    ^
Tier 1 website -lets say wordpress.com blog)
    ^
Tier 2 website -lets say 10 blogs on platforms like wordpress, blogger, tumblr for evey 1 blog from tier 1
    ^
Tier 3 (Not necessary) -10 blogs on platforms like wordpress, blogger, tumblr for evey 1 blog from tier 2
    ^
Low quality backlinks to tier 3.

Why so many tiers? To keep low quality backlinks as far from your money site as possible.

    P.S.
Its not p ossible to do it by hand. Tier 1 can be done by hand, other tiers - you need automation for that.

Can you explain the kind of automation you mentioned? Do you mean using some automatic bot to submit to these sites?

The problem with hundreds of backlinks are that they create a pattern..
If all your backlinks are the same type, google can get to you very easily..
So when you're creating a backlinks, do them in really randomly.

Social media traffic converts really, really poorly.
I've gotten sales using social media marketing, but only by engaging people one at a time and selling my products to them on an individual basis.
Also, "social signals" are WAY overhyped. These signals are less than 10% of Google's ranking factors.

Always prioritize content marketing/syndication and also mix your SEO efforts with social media marketing. Remember to distribute unique and quality content only. It'll also be good if you start your online branding as well. These days, it's also important to build your reputation online aside from using pure keywords only for linkbuilding. Good luck!
