Are links to the site more important, or are the links to the page more important.

Hey Warriors,

I need a little help here. I am making a content site, my site concept is Ceramic tile. There is good demand for this and not a lot of competition on the web about it.

I have been in the flooring business for more than 25 years, so I have a lot of knowledge about this subject.

Now to the point.

When I am researching my competition for my keywords like
ceramic tile kitchen
ceramic tile patterns
ceramic tile tools
and so on...

The competition on these keywords are the big players like home depot, Lowes, Dal-Tile and so on.

When I check the backlinks to the page most of them have no backlinks to the page and a few have just a few links to them maybe 6 or 7, However when I look at the backlinks to the site there are several thousand links to the site itself. I also looked at outgoing links and the same thing is true about them.

All of these sites are authority sites and I just want to make sure that with good SEO that I can get those spots before I start working on the site.

My question is, which is more important here?
The backlinks to the site, or the backlinks to the page?

Thanks for the help.

If you have a page on your site dedicated to the "ceramic tile kitchen" keyword, you obviously want to build backlinks to that page and not the homepage. You want a good, but not overwhelming amount of those links to have the anchor text of the keyword you're targeting. Anchor text diversity is important though. Links to the site (or homepage) are going to help that specific page rank high as well, as it improves the overall authority of your site.

Make the majority of your backlinks to your homepage.
PR and authority flows downhill. That's why lowes, homedepot,
etc. rank high for those terms with literally no backlinking except
internal. It's the way the big boys do it, and if you want to do
it, do it like the big boys. Ditto for amazon, craigslist, yahoo answers,
wikipedia, etc. Virtually no backlinks, but man those individial
pages rank high. Why? Because of the PR and authority of the
main page, not each individual page. One could say the same thing
about why threads here rank so high. No backlinks.

Now when you have spent all the time you can making backlinks to
your homepage, then do a few scattered around for others.

But most of the time you will have no time.

      Use internal linking. It's golden.

^ URL diversity is an important factor today. Only building links to your homepage is going to get you into trouble. Sure, the homepage is of course the most important page, but disregarding your inner-pages is not a good long-term strategy.

Domain authority is more important than page authority--that's why Home Depot and Lowes have those top spots with few links to their product pages. So it's more important to generate quality backlinks to your ENTIRE WEBSITE (not just the home page, not just the product page) to build up that authority. Of course, you do want to optimize the product pages as much as possible, too.

That said, I'm afraid you're going to have a very tough time competing with those kinds of high-authority sites for the top spots on your chosen keywords, unfortunately. You might need to settle for lower rankings or explore targeting more specific/longer tail versions of those keywords.

"When I check the backlinks to the page most of them have no backlinks to the page" It's a good signal. Don't worry too much about the domain authority. Of course the links to the page is more important for you to determine the competition. You can beat those pages easily. Because they don't have much backlinks.

You should understand the concept of "link juice" and has it flows through a site. If the home page of the site gets a link, and the home page in turn links out to 3 other pages on the site, each of those pages gets a portion of the "link juice" from that initial link.

So links to the home page are incredibly important and if the site is properly structured, meaning the internal linking is designed in a way to pass the link juice from the home page to the inner pages in a correct fashion (search "silo"), then the inner pages are getting a lot of value from those home page links.

With that said, it's okay for you to do smart link building to your inner pages as well. But I would send more to your home page simply because that's natural. Most links are to the home page of a site. So do that, and mix it in with the occasional link to your inner page.

Can you outrank these sites? Tough to say. But you don't necessarily need to get to #1 in this situation to get a good portion of the traffic. If a visitor gets search results and the top couple of sites are a Home Depot or a Lowes, and then they see your site, they're likely to go to your site if they are more interested in finding information versus making a purchase right now. That's a pretty big assumption I'm making but I think in your case it's a fair one.

Making most high quality links to homepage is a good practice, but be sure that homepage should include everything that you want to offer..While internal linking also make a link to the homepage..It will give more weight to your homepage internally..

Build backlinks to inner pages and the home page. Building links to only the homepage may actually do you no good. Build quality links to all pages and vary your anchor text. Build links from a variety of sites like web 2.0, press releases, articles, bookmarking, document sharing sites etc. To add more power to your backlinks, you should go for tiered backlinks.

Always build good backlinks to your inner pages. Your homepage will get ranking from ALL those backlinks because from the inner page there is a LINK (no matter it is inbound link!) to the homepage!

Of course point to your subpages. Because you want to rank your articles, NOT your blog! Your homepage contains ALL the recent posts and if any member visits your homepage, he will see A LOT of information and he could close the website even before starting reading it... That's why you need to get more visitors to your subpages!

Sites don't rank, pages rank. Point links at the pages you want ranked.

A great amount of quality backlinks for the home page really helps a lot. It adds authority to your website, and whenever you publish an article, it will most likely rank quite nicely without any backlinks at all. However, backlinks to individual pages of your site are just as important. I'd recommend to work on both.
