Why do guest blog posts work?

I have to believe the engineers at Google are somewhat competent. They know people are constantly trying to game the system. We saw them flush a lot of that out with panda/penguin, even if it took a while for them to do it.

However, they created the article marketing monster because of their PR algorithm and requiring backlinks. However, PR is rarely a factor anymore, and I even saw a post about how Yandex will no longer look at backlinks. While people made fun of Yandex, I can't help but feel they are on to something and Google must be thinking along similar lines.

They *know* backlinks are spammed. They must know that 99.9% of "guest posts" are complete BS links simply put there to the link owners site. Which brings me to my question ... why on earth does this still work? (I'm assuming it does in fact work because WF and the SEO world in general keep talking about link building)

I don't know what the alternative is for a search engine to decide which page should rank higher, but I just can't help but think this is crazy that with the talent pool and processing power Google have, that we can "manipulate" the SERPS through fake backlinking. Who knows, maybe it is working great until the next algo comes along...

They used links to essentially help determine the social credibility of a website--as at the time, social media didn't really exist and thus couldn't provide those types of signals.... well, perhaps an exception would be for BB type forums in a limited way.

However, I think that as Google continues to develop its rel="author" setup in Google +, that will be a big factor in rankings and will either replace or at least greatly influence the PR algorithm....

For example: if you have a writer that writes 5 pages a day about law, in a year or two, they would have written hundreds of pages about legal issues. Even without intent, simply via osmosis that writer is probably more knowledgeable about law than may other writers, so the perceived value of any law-related content that the writer posts will be quite high.... and the sites that have that content (with the rel="author" link in it), will benefit.

For me personally, I think press release syndication services will be the next to take a hit from Google....

Well, the fact is that guest blogging doesn't work anymore. Google released an official statement a few months ago saying that sites that accept or run guest post campaign for simply creating backlinks will be penalized.

I don't think it's a good idea for a search engine to totally ignore backlinks altogether. While social signals and all that are great, there's a lot of content people wouldn't naturally share with their FB or Twitter account, but what is still very much in demand.

I'll put it this way, quality backlinks are so strong ranking pages in Google SERPs that Google would most likely have to overhaul their algo., doubtful it would be the usual updates that's been going on for the last 15 years.

It doesn't matter If people are buying backlinks, or the next major ranking signal, there will always be something to buy that ranks a page.

BTW, I don't know anyone that cares about Yandex.

All you read was that Yandex was going to ignore backlinks for LOCAL COMMERCIAL keywords ranking purposes in ONE city because for those terms in that city, the backlinks were 100% spam.

...never ceases to amaze me how many are over-analyzing what Yandex are doing.

Google is doing the same, except they call it the Penguin algoirthm

Links are still the determining factor along with On-page optimization. The thing is you need relevant links for quality sources not a bunch of spammed links bought from a WSO.

One way to get high quality links is to send out a premium press release that has the potential to get picked up by a news distribution channel.
