How would you define site authority?

When I setup an expired domain, whether it's PR3-PR4-PR5 I can't really say that it's an high authority site. Perhaps it was in the past, and perhaps if I restored the site to the old state it might become it again.

But when I completely repurpose it I don't see any authority signs, sure blog post titles rank often at #1 or page one but a brand new site with a few good links can accomplish the same.

So when does Google start to treat a site like an authority, when it gets a lot of traffic? When it ranks for a lot of competitive phrases?

Or only when it receives a lot of links from other authority sites in the niche that matches the content on the site?

What do you think the game breaker is here?
#authority #definite #site

The reason blog post titles etc rank quickly is due to the backlink profile that the site has. if it has strong backlinks (im guessing it does ) then they are still working in the sites favor ( I'm guessing this is the reason for buying an expired domain that has PR or previously had)

In regards to a websites authority then relevancy plays a very big factor. You would need the best of both worlds strong backlinks and a tightly built site around your keyword theme.

I'm not sure if there is an actual trigger to when Google will start to treat a site as an authority - I'm guessing the aim for us would be to show google we are the most relevant in our niche.

Here's a few signs of authority while looking at the SERPs:
    • Multiple pages ranked from the same domain per keyword
    • Google Sitelinks per keyword
    • Google Mega Sitelinks per keyword (example)

Obviously a link profile that consist of other relevant sites/pages.

Google is totally random with assigning site links isn't it. Well random, it applies it when it feels it suits.

Are there ways to speed up the process, would amount of content have something to do with it.

its a subjective term but the basic idea is that you get the most/more traffic per specific niche of your site for it's related keywords than other sites.
