Interlinking, on the same server, same WMT account, bad idea?

Hi,
I used to have my own blog network and linked to my main websites. For my main websites I never interlinked them and I put them on separate servers and separate WMT accounts (and for some I didn't even use WMT to be careful).
But after I was hit by Penguin, I am changing my strategy and I'm doing more white hat SEO, making good quality articles etc. I have just started and I only have one site, however I am planning to add a few more sites/blogs (same theme, different topic).
Now I am wondering if I should be extra careful and not to interlink them etc. as before. Doesn't matter for 4-5 sites? What do you guys do & think?
