I think it should be part of your website promotion mix. Only exchange links with sites that are high quality and the same niche as your site.

While exchanging links massively with a lot of websites is considered dangerous in terms of downgrading websites' values, especially the new ones, if you manage to use reciprocal links with only a few select high-quality portals, the ones having high PR scores and being closely related to your targeted niche, perhaps you will have benefits without getting into troubles. Of course, as you can guess only a few of your incoming links should be gained through participating in such activities.

According to many SEO Professional Link exchange is consider as spam. But if you create both do-follow and no-follow relevant link with few amount it could be helpful for your site. Remember don't highly dependent on link exchange.

I don't think it is spam as long as you link to quality websites that add real value to your visitors. Think of it as a resources page where your visitors can discover relevant sites easily. Very sad that DMOZ did it the wrong way!!

Disregard EVERY ANSWER ABOVE in this thread because they do not know what they are talking about. They just are parroting what they have heard about link exchanges in general. There is absolutely nothing dangerous about a well setup three way link exchange.

One to one link exchanges yes but three way link exchanges leave no footprint as three ways happen naturally all over the web.

Abc.com links Cnn.com
Cnn.com links to Disney (sister site of ABC.com so owned by the same company)

You link to warrior forum and then theres a link from warrior forums to a sales page seperate from your money site. Can google sniff out from the pages that it was done by a deal? No - pure nonsense.

Saying Google can detect three ways is like saying google can detect a bought link just because it is bought. They cannot. There has to be some other footprint to detect either a bought link or a three way exchange. Neither are dangerous by themselves.

There's nothing wrong with a same niche reciprocal link. I'll take direct same niche traffic all day long.

Obviously you have to use your head & some self control, you don't want only 200 reciprocal links (example).

I think Mike pretty much summed it up nicely. The key is that it look natural, you definitely won't get anywhere with a page titled "Useful Links" with tons of unrelated sites on it. Google won't even index it many times. Put your links in context and get your links in context.

Any link that comes from a relevant authoritative niche site can be beneficial to yours. No matter whether it's a reciprocal link or not.

But don't get obsessed with this link building technique. These days diversity is the key.

3-way link exchange is OK but traditional link exchange is no longer effective and hasn't been for years.

Just don't link exchange when your links are on obvious pages like links.php or something like that.
