Can you explain this CTR drop?

Hi all,

I added a new ad unit in the top left of my site (as suggested in a message from Google) and it worked brilliantly - at first.

In the weeks since, the CTR for that specific unit has steadily declined and is now about a third of what it was for the first few weeks. (It was added in mid-September, stayed at a high level until mid October and then dropped throughout late October and November).

CPC has stayed roughly flat.

Why do you think this is?

I thought it may be banner blindness. Something new attracted attention for a few weeks, but then people began to ignore it. But around 80% of my visitors are new visitors, so it seems unlikely that ad blindness would be a big problem, doesn't it?

Maybe it's the ads being served to the unit and I was lucky to get some appealing ads for a few weeks?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Since you have 80% new visitors, it's odd that the CTR would drop this severely.

Maybe the 20% (your most frequent visitors) are the ones primarily clicking?

What I would personally do, is change banners, or rotate banners, and track links.

(No fancy plugins required. You can rotate the banners with Javascript and track links with Pretty Link Lite).

    Fishing Metaphor:

If you're fishing in a pond...

    And the fish aren't biting?

    You have two options.

Get new bait, or switch ponds.

Since you can't switch ponds in this case...

    Switch bait.

And when you do? You'll have new data that will help you determine the problem.

It's kindof like balancing an equation. The more variables you have, the easier it is to solve.

    :]

    Good luck

If CTR drop for all of ads units, that is normal. Maybe for season reason, because advertisers don't want to pay for online marketing at this time. CTR will increase when advertisers put more money into online ads.

If CTR drop for only new ads unit, that's is your problem. The only thing you can do now is to test, test & test. Place other ads format in other locations and find out what is the best for you.

    Good luck
