A followed hompage link from Stanford, UCLA, Harvard, NYU, etc.. certainly will. But the .edu links that you are talking about certainly won't.

To be honest i'd take 50 links coming from nytimes, bbc and huffington post over 50 links coming from 50 different edu blogs. Screw this backlink diversity and shit, if google thinks 50 links from random crap edu blogs is better than links coming from nytimes then google can go f*** itself. Think about the amount of traffic these authority sites are gonna send to my site, that alone is enough for me to choose authority over diversity.

FOX News is plugged into Disqus. You can get no-follow links from them all day if you want.

      Susssh don't tell anyone.

.edu links are only decent if they are placed on a .edu site as a resource reference. For example, real estate sites get a lot of .edu listings under the student accommodation parts of the site, as students look for places to rent. Blog comment edu's are pointless. Besides there are many other normal sites that give a higher authority.

Rather than getting .edu links, these days contextual links help a lot. Write more and more about your niche and share with your readers on various platforms and via guest posts - such links have more value than .edu links due to content relevancy.

Anyhow, if you are able to get a link from an .edu which has your theme content - that would be helpful too.
