SEO in 2014. What things do you watch out for?

Same thing they do every year for the past forever, keep eliminating web spam.

There's still a ton of it out there that still works. Like, very obvious stuff at that.

LOL man, sometimes it feels like G. is running on empty but because it can't
resist to terrorize webmasters, periodically G. is coming up with some scams
to keep them busy guessing what would be G's next "Reign of Terror" and
paid mouthpiece Matt C. can't wait to come up with new lies.

Nothing has changed & nothing will change as long as quality links rank pages.

Right now I'm copying a very simple technique from a set of pages that has the content/pages dated all the way back to 1999, believe me when I say they are dominating the SERPs with only 8 internal pages & a few quality external links.

The best thing anyone can do to learn SEO is learn basic HTML & learn how to reverse engineer pages in the SERPs, you'll learn more than any other source on the net.

SEO hasn't really changed that much. It is all about providing good quality content that helps the visitor and attracts high quality, relevant backlinks.

If you have both of those, your website will rank.

Now what has changed is what blackhat/spamming methods are working. And the big problem there is you never know what Google is going to do next to attack web spam.

You only know that they will do something. And if you are using those methods, you just cross your fingers that the next Google update doesn't tank your sites.

Agree with the comments above. Nothing changes even though there are a lot of updates from Google. The point here is that Google does not want spam and as long as you continue building great content and sharing good information online, you'll be fine

Always keep in mind that links with good quality of content and great quality of content on you site is the only way to rank now-a-days and always will be.. Now-a-days Google gives good repetition to dynamic sites adding content daily basis so always remember to add content on you site's blog.

Even in the next year and the years to come, the essentials of SEO will not undergo any changes. That is adding valuable fresh contents to the websites which are truly unique, and at the same time gathering some good links which in the long term will help websites emerge to the top pages of search engines. Google tries to find those websites which although may have been professionally promoted, but not adding anything valuable to the net and they may suffer some ranking drops.

Agreed yukon, nothing has changed as long as quality is there. Who says that Google will hit guest blogging? How is it possible? How Google will recognize that the link, you have got, is from a guest article? Will Google devalue all WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr links??? If you write any quality guest post, it isn't unethical. It will keep working in future. Benefit is always defined there. If you write a very HIGH QUALITY article, an authority site will accept and publish it and Google doesn't mind to credit you too as your own site will also contain quality content. If you write craps, you can publish them on CRAPS only and they never produce good results.. Conclusion is, never produce SPAM on the web, remaining is allowed in SEO as always.

SEO in 2014 will more depended on quality content and Social Media related. . If you build backlink, this should be on Content. Even sharing on social media you must adding some attractive content so that people may wish to read your article .

I agree with COMMON SENSE. I haven't done anything differently over the past 5 years and my sites are still dominating the search engines.

- Create quality content
- Pick a good title, make sure the keyword shoes in the URL, put the title in the filename of the article image
- DON'T SPAM or STUFF keywords in your content

And then share post it and also share it on your Facebook. DONE!

Stop trying to game the system and you won't have to worry with every Google update.

  Think of Googlebot as a dictionary/thesaurus, it doesn't comprehend meaningful sentences but they know the definitions of words & word associations.
  
  If I have a page with a bunch of words related to automobiles, Google strips out all the stop words & starts looking at relevant text. This is easy to test by taking one keyword anchor-text on a page & surround that link with relevant plain text keywords.
  
  Example:
  hood
  
  automobile
  
  starter
  
  In the example above Google knows that the keywords hood & starter belong in the automobile category, they're parts of an automobile so they're relevant.
  
  If the entire page was focused on the subject of clothing, Google would know that the keyword hood was part of clothing, jackets have hoods.
  
  Example:
  hood
  
  jacket
  
  starter
  
  In the 2nd example above since I'm focused on the keyword jacket (clothing), Google knows that hoods belong on jackets & the keyword starter is a brand of clothing that sells hooded jackets.

Just spray spammy links everywhere that they are irrelevant. That should do the trick!...oh and don't forget social bookmarking. Lots of them. As many as possible. Manually placed, mind you.

Seriously though, its about relevant helpful high authority backlinks and content marketing that users love. Popularity leads to higher rankings. So PPC and SMM will play some role as time goes on. Especially Google+. Though these will be difficult to prove causation, the correlation is more evident every month.
