When I build site nothing shows up in the top 500 without links

I always wonder how people can say that a site can get traffic without links.

When I build a brand new site I almost always never even pop up in the top 500 for the main and sub keywords. Not even talking about very competitive stuff, just like brand + product type + review, or best + product type like: best hair dryers or hair dryer reviews, or even as long tail as conair hair dryer reviews.

What am I doing wrong?

It's not that my site contains any duplicate content, I always prevent that with SEO plugins, canonical tags and the robots.txt where needed.

I also build the sites diverse enough with a mix of posts/pages with and without affiliate links, and extra stuff to pretty it up like comparison scripts and best lists.

Is there something I'm missing?

Once I start to build links they do start to pop up almost instantly at page two to four and then it's a matter of keep building links till we hit page one but it would be nice if the phrases would at least show up in the top 100 or something at least within a few weeks after launching the site.

You think the quality of the content might play a role here? It's not spun or mashed up but it does come from supposed to be "native English writers" lol, obvious we know better then that.

Flagged web hosting maybe? Got RSS tuned on? Using a sitemap generator? Submitted site and sitemap via Google Webmaster tools? How long do you wait?

I think the "Google Sandbox" was always a myth. A new site is sandboxed because Google doesn't know it exists. That's what links are for

Most of the time I don't submit a sitemap and I don't turn RSS on.

I wait about 2 weeks and by then all pages are indexed 9 out of 10 times, I know it can be done faster by using sitemap and url fetch tool in webmasters but I'm never in such hurry.

Once the links are build/drip feed it often takes about 4-5 days before the first rankings pop up.

I will try it with the sitemap and RSS to see if it makes any difference.
