Hello,

I have heard that directory submissions is dead for backlinking?

I have a submission software(Directory Bot) and was wondering if should even monkey with it if google doesn't give much weight to these types of links

Any thoughts?

Thanks

-Mark

I still use directory submissions to some extent. If allowed, they can be good for deep linking of your website. I think there is just so much buzz on web 2.0 link building you don't hear as much about directories.

I've found directory submission to be mediocre at best. Yeah, it's done a small bit for my sites, but only if I do a whole lot of it. I would recommend that you put the money for the software into a service that will do it for you instead of spending both money and time doing submissions. That way you can spend your time doing some more significant link building.

Directory submission is still an effective way to increase or atleast maintain a website's ranking (keyword/page rank). One needs to follow quality guidelines while doing it which softwares usually don't. for eg. the tile, description and keyword length which differs for different directories, using different titles and descriptions in every submission, and not submitting directories in bulk which can create spamming.
Its a constant process to be carried out with lots of patience to get quality backlinks as free directories usually takes time for approval.

I wouldn't go for an directory submission software. Sorry if this is not what you'd like to hear. And there are good reasons why NOT. Many of the directories out there are probably not indexed and your link could ends up many levels deep with no really benefits in terms of SEO perspective. I would not say that all directories are dead either. The best way to check if any directory is even worth your time submitting to is to do a search using 'site:URL of the directory" to check if its indexed. If not, forget it and move on to another directory.

    cheers

if you stick to the GOOD directories it can help you out. A link at dmoz.org is a good link to have and its a directory!

  • Yahoo Directory is also a good directory, although, at $300/year, it's pretty steep! Many of the free directories don't work like they used to; not maintained, abandoned, etc. Good luck getting into DMOZ; it's the Holy Grail of directories...

I still do it, but only occasionally. I get a few feeds that update new directories every week, and I submit to the top five.

Directory Submission alone works like a magic for long tail and less competitive keywords.. Directory submission alone can make you reach the first page..

If you asked me, I would say no. But there are too many useless directories so I will say choose wisely when you do submission. e.g. bestoftheweb, gimpsy,. etc...
