Article Marketing and Off Page SEO

I am writing articles and submitting it to ezinearticles.com (Article Marketing). My question is... is if I do Off Page SEO effort to my articles on ezinearticles.com ... will it work.

What I mean is that if I create backlinks to my articles on the ezinearticles.com site, will it work to rank my articles higher?
