    It works almost the same.

You just need to spend about an hour playing around with it

When it comes to Keyword Research, Market Samurai may be a better bet. For the $97 that it costs, it's well worth not having to deal with all the aggravation of trying to get accurate and complete data from the (new) Google tool.

The old free Google tool was pretty good, but this new Keyword Planner just doesn't do what I need a keyword tool to do.

However, if you are unwilling to spend money on a good tool, you can still use the Google KW planner to get somewhat of an indication of what types of keywords to target.

Namely, you can use the "suggested bid" and "Avg. Monthly Search" data in conjunction with a basic Google search of the keyword to estimate the profitability of the particular word or phrase.

BTW, you do need to HAVE an Adwords account in order to use the KW planner tool. However, that does not mean that you actually have to USE the Adwords service. So you can just simply create a username and password, and then you immediately have access to the KW planner tool.

The only product Google ever came out with that had a satisfactory user experience is search. Everything else they develop is a mess.

It is almost better to use a third party software to do research, even for AdWords keyword bidding because the planner is so horrible.

Rob is right, though. You only need to have an AdWords account. You don't even need to add a payment method, I believe.

Still, it is horrible to use. As is just about everything else Google develops.

It's Google Keyword Planner now. You have to have an Adwords account in order to access it. I guess Google got sick and tired of people using it and not advertising.
