    You need to analyze your links by checking all of the major backlink sources like Ahrefs, MajesticSEO and opensiteexplorer.

    Once you have a full list of your links comes the hard part as you will need to review all of your links and look for the low quality links. If you don't know what you are looking for you are gonna have trouble and spend a lot of time doing so.

    One tool I found was on linkdelete.com home page, just enter your domain and they tell you how many low quality links you have. That can then give you an idea of what you are dealing with.

    When I look for low quality links I look for article directory links, link network or reciprocal links, spammy coments, forum spam and exact anchor match type of links.

    You can use Web master to find the bad links, or use some third-party backlink checker such as ahrefs.

    Google Webmaster Tool is one of the best option for that, but you've to find the bad links manually.

      Do not rely on webmaster tools for backlink analysis. Many of my websites show 5-10% of my total links. Meaning they are missing over 90% of my link profile.

      I even have one site that shows ZERO links in webmaster tools and it has close to 20k links.

      If you are planning on analyzing links then you should do so via ahrefs or majsetic.

    There are numerous back link checker tools available for free and also with a paid version. However I prefer and believe in Google Webmaster tool. It shows the bad links, broken links and where it has found.

    Low quality links are usually the ones that are the most easiest to get...

    Just to mention some of them:

    blog comments,
    social bookmarks,
    directory links,
    fiverr links
    etc...

    First, you need to collect maximally full list of your site backlinks. There are lots of free and paid backlink tools that will let you do that.

    When done, you need to analyze each and every link against important SEO factors and sort all links that com from:

    - low-quality spammy website;
    - irrelevant sites;
    - spammy blogs and forums comments;
    - domains that have similar IP addresses (may be the part of a link network);
    - etc.

    After that, disavow these bad links.

    Also, you need to verify all the remaining links (the ones that come from relevant, high-quality websites). It could be that these links got deleted, broken, etc. If you find that there's something wrong with these links, you need to fix that.

    And finally, make sure that all your links have a diverse anchor text.

      A low PR link is not automatically a bad backlink.

      Actually, before you disavow links, you should make an attempt to have them removed. Submitting links to the Disavow Tool is not a guarantee that Google will ignore the links. They will just take it into consideration. The only guaranteed way to clean up the links is to have as many of them removed as possible.
