Everyone knows paid backlinks are being trashed by Google, but how is a site affected if it has them? Are you penalized or are they merely ineffective?

It really depend on the website you are buying your link from. If their intention was just keep selling and selling links to make some profit... You might get caught trading links, but this is a very rare case..

Actually it's not possible to know if Google is trashing paid backlinks. Most of the things regarding the Google algorithm you read on the internet is just speculation.

      Hi tomm,

If you are buying or selling links based on targeted traffic, you should be OK. Google is only targeting sites that are trying to sell Pagerank. Page rank is not for sell, it must be earned naturally.

If you buy a link for traffic, you will be fine, it may not pass any Pagerank, but that's fine, as long as you only paid for the targted traffic.

If you are selling links, be sure to include the nofollow attribute and you will be fine. Just don't try to sell pagerank or you will become a target for penalty by Google.
