Are there ever any new ideas in SEO?

Over the years, I've seen almost ever kind of SEO trick/technique talked about on forums and discussed endlessly on blogs. But most of these ideas are not new, some dating back over a decade, such as 'generate good content' and 'get backlinks'. Sometimes, the new idea is how you should get backlinks from one very specific site (such as Google+ or Pinterest) but again, it's still all about backlinking. So not really anything new. And, once everyone has tried it and that technique gets spammed up, Google gets wise and it stops working. I am wondering what are the really new ideas in search engine optimization. These would be things that are not commonly known, maybe even techniques which came out this past year or so and many people have not adopted and based on any recent Google search engine algorithm updates.

You want new SEO ideas but at the same time you said they'll get spammed by everyone & Google will put a stop to it.

I have several SEO things I do that I would never post on an open forum because of the spammers & the WSO stalkers.

Still, quality links & plain text are the core of SEO.

Matthew Woodward did a zero linkbuilding experiment on his own blog. He didn't do anything extra to create backlinks except writing the most amazing content there is around.

He ranks well on Google and pulls in 5 figures a month from that one blog of his. Here's the link --> hxxp://matthewwoodward.co.uk

If you do what Google tells you to do, you'll be fine. If you game 'em, you're dead.

Your buddy there is either naive, or a little bit crazy. What's up with this rant?

Consumerism needs people to having a burning desire for the best car, the best brand of clothes or the latest iPhone. Which is funny because when people finally get those things, they just want the next thing rather than being happy/content with what they already have.
If you have ever felt like a slave to the system, it is because you are.
From the day we are born to the day we die consumerism and capitalism is drilled into us by parents, teachers, friends, press, music, films, media & everywhere you look. Christmas is a great example of that.
All this actually creates though is greed, corruption & selfishness at the cost of social values, community and well-being.
In Costa Rica there is no capitalist driven rat race for money

      LOL, that's funny stuff.

        ...........that's funny stuff.

besides a sentence fragment and a few other minor issues theres not a thing wrong with it. face it - you laugh at it and call him crazy because it went straight over your head.

What he is saying is that the drive to make more and more money is not universally constant throughout the world. There are enclaves, communities and societies where people concentrate more on the simple things like family friendship, relaxation and enjoying the beauty of their country.

Many of these comunities and countries are in central america and the Carribean islands. A ton load of people wanting a different vibe are moving to Costa Rica, Panama etc. Get an education of your world - travel some.

Congrats to Matthew for success in the experiment and in getting his blog on the map (so to speak). he worked hard and smart for it and earned it. But of course.....

haters goin to hate because they haven't earned it..

Nothing goes over my head. If you read his whole rant he moved to Costa Rica because "In Costa Rica there is no capitalist driven rat race for money. People are open, kind, friendly and treat each other with respect."

Only someone who is insane or naive would believe that. The U.S. State Department has another take on the country.

"Petty theft continues to be the biggest threat in Costa Rica. Pick-pocketing, muggings, purse snatchings, and theft are common occurrences," it reads in part.

The happy non-capitalist people of Woodard's Utopian fantasy would have no reason to engage in any of those activities. Instead they would remain kind, open, and treat people with respect.

BTW, not only have I 'travelled' all over the world, I've also lived in several South and Central American Countries. I also spent long periods of time in Jamaica and Dominicana.

The people are nice to tourists because they want your money. Stick to topics you know something about if you plan on correcting me. Offhand, I can't imagine there are any

Matt' deserves to be emulated to a degree but for full perspective lets remember - a great deal of Matt's blog IS about linkbuilding and creating backlinks. There's just something VERY off logically when you point to a blog that talks about and profits from link building and and try to use it as a poof site for not building links

Most of us live and breathe only marketing so it's not "new" but it's relatively new - Social Network Signals are playing a more important role in rankings, as we see websites with similar or weaker backlink profiles ranking better because they have a) stronger Google authorship b) more G+ likes, Facebook likes/shares, Twitter tweets, retweets, favorites, Pinterest pins, repins, Linkedin shares, Stumbles, social bookmarks, etc

In non IM niches I've found manual forum posting to be extremely powerful as it's often overlooked. I just ran a test on it, and in 2014 its yielded impressive results.
