Seriously, I sound stupid.

I got a Google penalty (1st time) for unnatural link building. I did submit to alot of directories and I am in the process of deleting them and have already sent a reconsideration request. However, I don't think its good. I didn't even say "I will never do it again" I just said, I don't know why I got this penalty bla, heres some research.

OK. So I did a check on my website and I have 16 no follow links and 603 backlinks! Ayy...

And why is that a problem?

First of all, Google does not punish sites for not having no-follow links. Secondly, Google employees have stated in the past that only about 2-3% of all the links they crawl have the nofollow attribute. You are right in line with that number.

It doesn't look natural. It looks like link building.

      I think your confused.

What looks like unnatural link building is things like irrelevant forum sigs (ex: Free iPad Air) with keyword stuffed anchor-text, even If it's a nofollowed link.

Having nofollow links does not make a link profile look natural. You can find plenty of sites ranking just fine with zero nofollow links.

If anything, I would say unless you are a major brand advertising on a lot of sites, having too many nofollow links could look unnatural.

If its no-follow, the keywords won't matter right?

      ROTFLMAO!

Title says it all: I need no-follow links!

Sure. And I need a hole in the head.

Unnatural links are not defined by nofollow or not status.

So much misconceptions about unnatural links.

You think you can spam a bunch of nofollow links and fly under
      the radar?

That's why google tries to keep one step ahead of IM clowns with
their updates. They say don't look under rocks. Ok, say the IMers.
We'll find rocks at the bottom of the ocean. Now we're safe!

Google is still looking at the nofollow/irrelevant backlink/URL, otherwise they wouldn't know the link is nofollow to begin with.

I'm surprised you have so many do follow backlinks as most people struggle to find even a few dozen. Most Wordpress blogs are no follow. You could start posting high quality comments with your backlinks on those blogs and they will show up as no follow. These blogs are not hard to find with a simple search in Google.

I suspect the primary reason you got pinged was too little variation in the link anchor text.

Very much so. Just think of how realistic (or unrealistic) it would be for 1000 bloggers to be linking back to your site with the same three words in the anchor text link. But so many people are building backlinks in that way. When in reality, most bloggers who give an editorial or freely given (recommendation style) backlink will simply use the 'read more' or 'click here to read article' link and not bother adding anchor text to the link. Those links are more natural. So you have to replicate that style of backlinking in some way not just using only keywords but mixing it up.

So directory submission is no more an effective method. And, we have a possibility to be penalysed by Google doing so.

You should focus on quality backlinks for your website like Web 2.0s, guest posts, blog networks and social signals but all of them should be submitted with unique content. Forget about getting no follow links, if you really needs them then just submit some article to no follow web 2.0s and build some high PR wikis direct to your money site.

I know this may seem like a stupid question but is it OK to use no-follow backlinks to vary my anchor text. Easy links to gain such as article backlinks and blog comments can be used to vary my keyword density but won't damage my site because they're no follow. Anyone see any issues with this approach?

Google has stated that nofollow links have no anchor text or PR relevance, so I'm not sure it would really help to vary anything.
