The Real Motivation Of Google In Changing Their Algorithms

This is a thread to express your opinion about Google and their intentions in changing their algorithms so often.

As both of us know there have been a lot of people who have experienced untold emotional distress and massive financial loss by Google doing its Panda and Penguin changes as well as other changes that have disrupted businesses built on the best SEO principles.

I feel that one of the main motivations behind these changes by Google is to force online business to buy paid advertising from Google instead of getting a free ride on SEO efforts. Whenever you size up a company that is not set up for benevolence then it is always wise to follow the money in analyzing why they do what they do.

What is your opinion?

Happy New Year to all !!!

Their motivation is to give users the best search results possible. If they fail to do that, they lose market share in the search industry. If they lose market share, fewer advertisers will use AdWords and they make less money.

So yes, it is money motivated, just not in the idiotic way you suggested.

But why then do I keep getting shit results for things I absolutely need to know? Like when I have a problem with my OS or need a driver, I see a link I think will help, just to land on some shitty "Install Our All-in-one Driver Software" bullshit. Do they do anything to weed that crap out? No, it seems they just get their undies in a bunch over things that really don't matter, like Amazon review sites.. who cares?! But it's okay if I waste 3 hours installing virus ridden driver software, huh? Or land on those stupid catch-all "Just Answers" sites that list snippets of every question ever asked since 1995 and have to sift through questions that have nothing to do with what I'm asking? /rant

You make zero sense. Cry and whine about the results but at least make some attempt at rational conversation. So its a big ranting deal when you search for a driver keyword and get a product about DRIVER software  that you don't want but its NOT a big deal if a product review site ranks.

Do you people realize how looney you sound to outsiders (including the people at Google)?

"My crappy review site should rank. It doesn't matter much.......but...er.....um..... but...I tell you what...... when I am searching for something and a product ranks that I don't want to then its a big deal."

This is why they can only smile and pour champagne when marketers get upset over an algo change. They can't and won't respect the outlandish marketers thought process and neither do most Google users who are not marketers.

        Its win win for them

because with that kind of reasoning their sentiment is

        "Who cares" what marketers think?

But they aren't doing shit about anything of any significance to real problems.
People who download and install drivers from sites they don't know and get a virus'? Nope......No company has yet come up with a solution that stops people from downloading stuff they should not

No cure for stupid has been found by doctors yet either and the vaccine is taking a lot of time. Lots of things are Google's fault but what you download isn't one of them.

Of course you know this. The real rant .....as is always the case...is that your stuff got slapped. Because if every marketer at WF was ranking their one page squeeze page number one running nothing but SenukeX, or GSA you would love Google's algo to death. and offer your sisters, Moms and daughters for Matt Cutts to date...whispering.....

The bold part is kinda ridiculous. We usually have these whining threads when there is a major update. Was there one recently?

Google has not done a single thing different than hitting SEO that they said for years was not "best seo principles". Whats been hit mostly? link spamming and lousy content which Google has been fighting for years. Those two will continue to be hit. Build your business on that then its all your fault.

Internet Evolution. Search engines try to deliver the best results. Online marketers try to learn what the search engines like and mimic it, search engines adapt/refine to filter out the noise and the game continues.

Without this "competition" there would be no progress. Embrace the game, and view them as an ally (can be hard if you have your eggs in one basket and it gets smashed), since they are helping you expand your online arsenal and strategy to success. The gazelle and the cheetah understand this; survival of the fittest is appropriate once you realize (like you said) how many fail out or give up due to this volatile environment.

Googles motivation for SERP algo. updates is the same motivation you have when your email inbox gets blasted with spam. Mark as spam.

Its a balance between keeping the top 80% of Adwords spenders happy (big businesses) and keeping the quality of the search results better than the competition.

Perfection isn't Google's goal as that's too expensive and frankly overkill and would jeopardize Adwords entirely.

Google claimed that their Adsense/Adwords revenue dropped after all those latest updates so sounds more like a conspiracy theory.

When google started they were a search engine but slowly they have built their base as a "authority" search engine. So everyday people like I and you search on google and if something appears on page1 we consider it as a "good link". Why? Because Daddy G showed it.

Saying this, google now only wants to bring credible search result which genuinely helps people. They are very well aware that 1000s of companies are daily trying to crack loopholes and Google has to get strict day by day to dominate as "authority search engine". Yes, they are also promoting their own product. But buying their own product doesn't guarentees you rank rather provides you a platform to understand and strategize to rank better. This inturn means that sites are improving information wise, in terms of better navigation and overall they are using "ethical" way to make money.

I agree with what most have said above. Google is about the user experience, you know? If users are not getting the best experience, why turn to Google? No one wants to look at spam, epsecially if you're trying to get an answer for something right away.

And this a benefit to all the people out there who are completely white hat and have their efforts undermined due to all the spam and whatnot. Of course, everything has it bumps in the road (i.e. panda or penguin bugs) but in the long run, it'll all work out!

Both these statements are the same, so Unity's thought isn't idiotic at all, in fact I'm leaning toward that more. Most Adwords advertisers (the average joe) have no clue about Google's market share anyways. They just say, it's Google, let's advertise on Google. As far as best search results possible, they're obviously not the Gods they make themselves out to be. They just would rather you be afraid to do Seo and instead join their Adwords program.

I'm actually not whining because my site got slapped (I don't own a MFA site, that's just my point, couldn't care less about them), it just seems their focus is on removing relevant sites that might have a little spam pointed at it than it is on removing irrelevant sites that are built in such a way as to mask themselves as being relevant.

That's why it does seem that by having their focus on slapping sites with spam they might get people to join their Adwords program, and ignoring the crappy results end of it with sites they know never will join their program.. they don't have to, Google lets those sites and results through, because they don't spam hence aren't marketers? I don't know.

Besides, I like to rant. /rant

And to continue this rant, why are answer sites like Yahoo answers still showing up? Especially those Multi-answer sites.. you know, the ones that have snippets of questions and starting paragraphs, with links pointing to the sites they're on? Not once have these sites ever given me a real solution to my problem. ok /rant

The great thing about Google are "THESE" updates. There helping "some" of us rank higher and faster due to, too many spammers who shouldn't be in the positions that some are in. In my eyes, there working with me.

If you play by the rules you wont crash and burn.

    This is not true.

I have a site getting 1000 uniques a day in the gambling niche and it has hardly any links. SEO is live and kicking. The traffic is still there, the tactics have changed (for the better). Massive sites, with good content are now being rewarded. Stop being lazy and build something good.
