Should I need to pay for SEO? Now due to the recent Google planning, if your content is unique, if you know how to use meta tags then you can easily acquire good rank and more than that, there is GoogleAdwords which will automatically enhance page.

Short answer is yes. You need to pay with money or applied knowledge over time.

To rank in a competitive market you will still need backlinks that the Google ranking software "likes".

Google Adwords is certainly an option. Just make sure the numbers make sense.

eg. If you are paying $1 per click for a potential lead for a $9.95 ebook then maybe not. If, on the other hand, you are paying $3.25 per click for a potential lead on a $300,000 reconditioned Lear jet engine, then maybe Adwords is for you.

I fully agree with this! I also prefer doing it myself, I can always help others, but I prefer working on my own websites in order to be 100% sure that if I get something wrong, I won't hurt other people's websites!

Learning the basics of SEO is all most people really need. Obviously if you are setting up a very important website that requires a position at number one on Google then you will obviously have your work cut out. However, it's really not difficult to learn how to create decent page headings, using the correct keywords that relate to your website's content. If your website falls into a niche category then your life will obviously be made easier because you haven't got so many people in competition with you. There are tons and tons of websites and you Tube videos that will give you really great advice on how to optimise your website for the search engine.

There are two types of people that get Google penalties:

    1) Churn and burn spammers that know going in that they are breaking the rules but it's worth it to them

    2) Do-it-yourselfers that learn only enough to get in trouble

Oh wait ok there is a third:

    3) Business owners that hire the cheapest possible "SEO" and have no idea that they re sending their site to the slaughterhouse (but they should really know better, you get what you pay for.)

So my vote is : either take 6 months to a year to seriously study basic SEO on your own, enough to at least reasonably understand the risks or hire a good SEO with a great track record and references.

this is the best answer in this thread. take 6 months to a year and use that time as "education" to become a master at seo.

Do you know how to do SEO yourself? If so, then no. You will not need to pay for it. If you do not know how to do it, but want better rankings, then yes. You are going to need to pay someone.

Meta tags do nothing for rankings. Unique content is not enough either.

To be honest, I do not think Google cares about unique content nearly as much as people think. There are something like a few trillion webpages out there right now and growing. How many different ways are there to write an article about how to change a door knob? But should that mean someone's article is less valuable than another? I don't think so. As the internet grows more and more there is going to be very little out there published that is 'unique' outside of news stories and new and emerging markets.

      .
I wouldn't exactly describe a websites about "changing a doorknob" as being unique :-)

I think there's misconception about unique. It's very probable that my stupid comments that I use to soil WF threads are "unique", at least when I choose to use needlessly long sentences and use obscure phrases that are not in the top 2000 of most used English words. Nobody in their right minds would visit a site that consisted only of my forum comments.

Unique in the sense of "words not exactly in the same order" isn't a way to get a readership. Heck, not plagiarizing or copying other people's stuff isn't even a starting point, but common courtesy. The fact that Cutts has to say something like that makes me embarrassed for the mankind.

Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
Who told me this? An ex Google web spam engineer.

I suppose you could ask yourself what is unique nowadays? It seems to me that you can find just about everything on the Internet

Personally, I don't think I would pay for SEO unless I relied on a website to make a living.

There's a little more to it than just unique content and meta tags, sorry to say..

I would say it's all really dependent. What is your knowledge of SEO? Do you understand white hat and black hat techniques? Backlinks? On-site optimization? Google Places page optimization? Map maker? The list continues... Some of the above I cannot agree with because it's more than meta-tags and content, however, all important.

My recommendation is learn the basics. Get familiar with the search engines' guidelines and have a good base understanding of the SEO world. This gives you a better look at what you can and can't handle. Yes, there are a lot of SEO companies that are looking for a quick buck and will use any type of terrible technique to have you rank for a day or have you end up with a penalty on your website, which BELIEVE ME, is the WORST.

I'm proud to say I am a part of a company that prides themselves on using the right way to do things because really all you have is your word right? Point, blank, period, from all aspects, do you research!

Well I ain't gonna do it for free

Unique content and meta tags ain't gonna rank you, no idea who told you that.

Google Adwords is a complete different traffic source, you can't compare that to organic rankings.

Even Google hides some of the tactics because of the spammers, Using the keywords again and again people started to spam whole website contents. So Google bought new algorithm to against keyword stuffing. So they always hide some of techniques to avoid spamming.

I don't think this would be the case if:

    1. you have a competitive niche
    2. if you have set long term goals

Basically, this is a misconception (still) among many people out there who only have a slight idea about what SEO is about (for them, adding keywords and metas are just fine).

But my friend, let me tell you one thing straight. SEO is not a game of amateurs anymore. If you are serious with your business and do everything with a plan, I would suggest you hire a good SEO agency or at least keep yourself up-to-date with the ever-changing SEO techniques.
