Does creating a sitemap but not submitting it do anything?

I know submitting a sitemap to google gets you indexed faster.

But is creating a sitemap and then not submitting it any different than not creating one at all?

Reason being, I am new to SEO and rather superstitious at this time. I created a site maybe a few days shy of 2 weeks ago and I am already ranking on 1st page of google.

I created a sitemap but never actually submitted it. I am making another similar site and didnt plan on submitting it to google but am now wondering if I should even bother creating a sitemap at all?

Submitting sitemap can help Google to know your site better and Faster... But eventually Google Index each and every page... without any sitemap....

It is a best webmaster tip to create and submit sitmap to Google and other search engine... you need to submit once...

Unless you block Google from crawling the xml sitemap they'll eventually crawl the sitemap file (trust me they'll eventually find it). I would still take a few min. & submit the sitemap URL to WMT.

    WMT will give you confirmations:
    • File is formatted correctly
    • File is indexed
    • URL isn't broken

Those are a few good things to know.

If you created the sitemap and upload in the server and not submitted in the website and thinking google not crawl your sitemap, its wrong, google crwal you sitemap file tool if you submit or not submit it in the GWT. So, i suggest submit it or disallow sitemap from robots.txt

Don't worry, submitting a sitemap won't break the charm.
By the way, it's not about being #1 on Google, it's about being #1 for the right keyword.

Well, usually people submit a sitemap when they make changes to the site, so that the search engine catches up with them faster.

If the site map file is not having a standard name like sitemap.xml and there is no mentioning of it in the website or robots file then it will be hard for SE to find it and the indexing process will be delayed.
