Does anyone know what "drive by" links are? I ran a backlink audit on majesticseo.com today and found a bunch of sites linking to our site from the past 3-4 months when we have no one doing link building.

The IT Manager stated it could be "drivebys" where people can hit the site and link to it etc.

I can tell you that we use wordpress and have to clear the site previously because of spam. Could this spam be linking to our sites? It is all kinds of useless sites that would be considered black hat. Any enlightenment is greatly appreciated as these links are a complete mystery.

    Attempted sabotage by a competitor? Though I don't like to assume the worst of people, if you think they are links that would hurt your ranking, then this is a possibility.

    Is it 10 links or 10,000 links?

    Have your pages dropped in the SERPs?

    Turn off comments, or at least moderate them before the spam/links go live.
